DasDubber,
Super job on building your car! It's an inspiration to look at the work you've done. Do you plan to take it back by and show it to the previous
owners like you did with the earlier car?

I'll be trying to get to see the original owners in the next couple of weekends - they will be wrapped I am sure! Welcome to aussieveedubbers by the
way! A good mate of mine lives in Scottsdale, AZ - he has helped by sending a lot of parts over here from the US for this project!nn[ Edited on31-8-2005 by Dasdubber ]

Really don't want to take a guess - I could add it all up but there is no point. Sorry I can't be much help - all I can suggest is to calculate your
expected costs as accurately as possible taking into account parts and labour.....then double it (at least). Also estimate the time it will take to
complete it....then triple that. There are exceptions to the rule but full body off restos are never cheap/quick.
Well, the Beetle was presented at the Auto Showdown at Brisbane over the weekend - there were mostly newer jap cars there but a couple tough older
vehicles. Here are a few pics:

The show wound up at around 6pm tonight after which I drove it back to the Gold Coast (first major trip) - cruised at 110km/h no probs - temps stayed
in check and car felt really stable at speed. The Type IV certainly has some torque - especially noticable on any hills/inclines. I would like more
power through the mid to upper end of rev range but that will come later perhaps.
Still have some work to do on the steering but shouldn't be too hard. Some oil mist is coming out behind the crank pulley (despite -10 breather
lines) - all little stuff to sort out.
Managed to walk away with the award for "old school award - pre 66" which was cool. Hopefully will get started on the amp install this week but
unfortunately won't have it ready for action day next sunday - takes a while to get the f/glass sorted.

Yeah must be my work firewall. Yeah its nice to see it on the puter with such a high quality image - as mentioned by a few who have seen it in the
flesh, the photos don't do it justice. So its good to allow people to see it closer to the way it looks in real life. Cheers

I nearly went to the show saturday to see it but since I was on my motorcycle on a rare leave pass I got to sandgate beaches instead- sea breezes!

Yeah I owe a whole lot of 'quality time' to my lovely wife Katie - in fact whilst the Beetle was at the show on the weekend, it was the first
weekend I wasn't either working on the car or the house for about 2 years! We can now actually enjoy cruising in the dub rather than just looking at
it in the garage! You are right, without the support of our significant others, these sort of resto adventures wouldn't be possible.
Cheers again

Just another pic of the beetle at the auto showdown last weekend - just found it on another forum and its better quality than my camera. Funny how the
paint looks so different in different lights.

I'll update some more maybe from the jamboree next week or if I get some work done on the amp installation. Cheers for comliments at the show in

Anyone who knows me will (hopefully) agree I am not one to gloat or boast...but thought I'd share the awards over the last three weekends.
X-torque Auto Showdown:
Best pre 66 car
VW Action Day:
Best Interior
Best Modified Beetle
Entrants Choice
Car of the Show
Fast Fours Jamboree:
4th Best in Show
I built it to drive it (already have some nice stone chips from the runs up and down the highway), not just to show but the positive feedback (and
commendations) are certainly a bonus.

Now the shows have finished for a few weekends, time to get back to work. Amp rack had to be redesigned for the new amp - mdf platforms will be used
as a base for cover pieces to hide wiring etc.
Steel frame will be used to mount mdf skeleton over which fibreglass will be laid for some nice curves. Power distribution block and crossovers will
also be integrated (still to finalise that part of the design!).

Whats your ride height in the front now......
And sure you're not going to crank up the amp to see what it sounds like.... and anyway you will need to crank it to hear the stereo above the
induction and exhaust roar..........
And I can vouch for Dasdubbers modesty when it comes to his awards.... though he might need to rent his own house in brisbane just to keep the
awards....... |

Yeah the front is sitting nice and low and still no rubbing which is sweet!
Still pottering away on the amp rack - slowly but surely it is coming together. Steel frame is now done, mdf will be screwed to this and will make the
frame over which f/g will be laid. The piano hinged section will be used to cover the wiring to the amp. Hard to envisage at the moment but hopefully
it will take shape soon.
The welds have not been finished yet - just all tacked together by the way!

Cheers mate, I am an Audiologist - I basically fit hearing aids and perform hearing assessments. I was fortunate to pick up a lot of skills/knowledge
from my old man when younger as it is into restoring old Chevs. A lot of this sort of work is self taught through internet research/books/trial and
error! You learn quickly when mistakes either cost you time, or more painfully money!
