Well, a bit more progress on the amp rack. As is usually the case, plans have changed as I have progressed with the construction. Originally the little rounded skeleton pieces were going to be used as the frame over which fibreglass would be laid - however as I trial fitted them up I kinda liked the exposed look.

So I decided to use them as a highlight and add thin mdf to the inside to cover the amp controls and power/ground wires etc. The piano hinge allows easy access to the controls/fuses.

Nothing too exciting (I know you'll probably be getting sick of reading about this resto) :P

Started sorting out the carpet surrounding the amp rack etc - photo is pretty blurry but you get the idea.

Managed to finish up the carpet around the amp rack - not perfect but tidies it up quite nicely. Windscreen washer is finally hooked up and working.

Wiring from crossovers to splits is done (just have to wire amp to crossovers) - 1/0 gauge power cable will be routed to stinger distro block (to be mounted at top tier of rack in centre). 4 gauge will be routed to amp, and second run to small unfused distro block to provide power for the HU, and neon/s.

Well, as if you hadn't figured already, this sort of thing takes a lot of time!

First the base for the top tier was cut from mdf and edges routed. The hole up the top is just to provide some back lit illumination through the plastic Stinger distribution block (from underneath the base).

Second pic shows the amp and its ridged cover plate (hinged for access to amp controls), along with distro block in place.

Last pic shows the 'bones' which will form the shape of the upper tier - these will be secured in place via hot glue then fabric stretched over them to which the fibreglass can be applied. Hopefully more to come soon.

Thanks Jen :)

Although nothing special, there has finally been a few little waves around so I spent most of the weekend surfing instead of working on the car (part of the reason why we moved!)....but anyway, the skeleton of the rack's upper tier was hot glued into place before fabric was stretched over and stapled in place. Resin was applied (shown in pic) to provide a semi rigid base over which some f/g matt will be applied. (next step).

I just learned from online resources and trial and error. Here is a start for you - to see the pictures though you might have to register to the forum (easy process):

http://www.caraudioaustralia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=49903

Most car audio sites will have lots of how to's and question/answers re. f/g'ing - or you can do a search in google - there is heaps of info out there (sorry I don't have direct links on hand though)

cheers
Alan

Thanks to Mike and Brad and whoever else, the gallery of the full rebuild is back online:

http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/album95?page=1

That details the resto from start to finish (well its almost finished).

Oh yeah, here is a link to a movie of the first run on the day of fire up (dial up users beware) - I will get some clearer vids/sound some time soon. Just click on the movie camera icon thingy.

Slowly but surely the amp rack progress continues. When painting fibreglass (rather than carpeting or vinyling it), a lot more time has to be spent to get it spot on.

There have been about 8 layers (most of which gets sanded off) of filler applied to get the desired shape. Lots of sanding thats for sure! Hopefully will have it high build primer then colour soon.

Well I pulled my finger out and shot a couple coats of high build primer this arvo. Overall pretty happy with the prep - only a couple of areas that will need a bit of glaze putty. Took ages to sand between the ribs on the hinged cover piece - pain in the ar$e but should be worth it.

I've inhaled a bit of bog dust thats for sure but I try to keep the lungs protected with decent masks/filters!

Yeah it will be a little heavy, lucky the type IV has some torque! If funds permitted a turbo would be on there sooner than later! But alas N/A will have to do for now!

Not long to go now, finally got the high build primer on (a few coats with some sanding and fine filler in between)....then base (pic 1) and clear coat (pics 2 and 3)! Now to let it harden for a little while before starting to bolt it all back up!

Finally the amp rack is finished - after fiddling around with the wiring and getting everything sorted before the upper tier went in, it was time to bolt it in place (4 M8 S/S button head bolts should keep it secure!).

I ran out of time tonight to fire it all up because I have to crimp the last couple of 4 gauge power/ground connections on the amp.

The wiring consists of 1/0 gauge stinger hpm cable from battery (through in-line fuse right next to battery) which runs through heater channel up into the distribution block. This is then fused and split into two 4 gauge runs - one into another (more basic) distribution block under the amp (glad I have all that space due to the dash mod!)....and the other into the amp power connection. The second distro block splits power for head unit (fused) and neons (all fused too).

Nice to finally have this thing in there!

The neons are just for fun - there will be no underbody kit (not that there is anything wrong with that) :)

Just to break it up a bit mainly - I would have liked to incorporate some vinyl into the upper tier but A) didn't have matching vinyl used in the car, and B) wanted to get this thing finished as there will be a couple of photo shoots coming up (more info later).

So I guess this is pretty much the last major update for this thread, thanks for being patient (most of the time) and following the resto from start to finish - its been a big effort.

I have to pass greatest thanks to my wife Katie for her tolerance, understanding, forgiveness (time and money expenditure), help and assistance (sanding/masking etc) and most importantly her support.

Cheers also to all the others who helped either in time, help, parts and whatever else. Brad (blup58) most of all - I managed to turn his neighbour against him during the resto of my beetle/his oval with all the noise...but the towing/storage/lifting/moving etc was all appreciated. Also Alan (063bug) for all his help including but not limited to stripping the pan after the original por15 didn't stick....Pete and Rod for helping with its debut fire up/run....and any others I forgot.

This post is getting out of hand so I'll finish now with thanks to my old man, firstly for the loan of the tools/equipment....but mostly for passing on many skills, knowledge, and passion for car resto's which will be with me for life.

Over and out....for now.
