Thanks guys....I guess your right oval tofu - our projects are never really "finished".

Well with some great satisfaction and a big grin I finally got the audio system working - no problems, no blown fuses, no dramas surprisingly considering this was my first ever audio installation. Only issue was the sub didn't work initially - found out I forgot to reconnect the sub box...once sorted I was enjoying some 'doof' and 'uunce uunce' sounds in the garage tonight! The Dynaudio 240 GT splits are expensive but well worth it, along with the alpine head unit. From Hilltop Hoods to Jack Johnson, the sound was awesome - still have to play around with the amp filters, time alignment (to regulate the pathlength of the left and right speaker outputs so it reaches the drivers head at exactly the same time), and other settings to fine tune. I must say I'm loving it.

Now just to find time to tune the engine again and get rid of the slight flat spot off idle (jetting changes probably required and accel pump adjustment)....the fix a slight lag in the steering. Then to enjoy driving it.....then to start/finish the resto on the 70 bug (originally thought it was 68)...that will be for sale once done.

Sorry to resurrect this thread from the archives - just a few pics from a car audio show on the weekend (got second in the novice class) and some from the show at coomera on sunday.

I promise to only update this thread with any changes or shows - thanks for you interest to date.

Back from the depths of the members ride section, this thread is revived.

After many runs and a bit more fine tuning, the engine is still running hot. So an external cooler with fan was required. Pulled the engine today (I knew that removable rear apron would come in handy!) and cleaned everything up, then fixed the cooler into place. Hopefully over the next few days I'll plumb up the AN fittings and s/s braided line.

The beetle certainly stands out as I tend to get lots of comments and looks which is really great. I certainly love driving it, but must admit the most pleasure for me is in the resto itself - once I sort out a carport, I'll get stuck into the 1970 beetle resto so I can sell it. Then the splitty panel project will begin some time after that!

Cheers
Alan

For now the fan will be manually switched so I control when it comes on/off. Being a type IV case, full flow was easy to achieve because I will be using an adaptor which screws onto the filter mount - this has an inlet/outlet.....this will then flow through a filter mounted off the bumper bracket, then into the cooler, then back into the adaptor (and into the case).

Depending on how it goes I may add a thermostat later but won't bother if not necessary (the cost of all these AN fittings add up pretty quickly!).

Correcto-mundoh. Temp gauge will dictate when the fan will be switched on - obviously there is some lag time so I will be conservative.

Got room for you if you need something quick or until you get your carport, bus gets moved outside for any work. Just 'round the corner too.

Cruising around the suburbs it will push 210 (gets there a lot faster when pushing it hard)....when doing a highway trip (say 1 hour) it can get to 240 pretty easily. It is a new autometer sender in the sump plate, new autometer gauge so I am pretty confident it is accurate. I pulled the plugs the other day and no real signs of running lean (or rich). Timing is set at 12 degrees initial and 28 total with the mallory unilite.

I would like 180-190 but would be happy to keep it under 210 max.

Thanks heaps Cam - may need to take you up on the offer when I pull the body off the pan on the new project! You'll have to drop around for a beer some time soon. Hope you got some waves on the weekend - was cranking out the front sat and sun mornings! :thumb

I dropped around to the old couple's place twice when still living in brissy but they were out both times. Providing I get the oil system done this week, I am going to possibly drive it up again on the weekend and see if I can catch them!

Cheers mate - let me know if you want any help with the splitty whenever you get stuck into it.

Back to the bug - did a little more work this evening - managed to finish the plumbing with AN fittings and braided lines from case to filter to cooler back to case. Just waiting on seals then the rest of the engine can go back together hopefully for a test run this weekend.

Cheers Alex - yep the $ add up with the AN fittings - the braided line is not too exy, but the angle fittings don't come cheap! At least they are reusable and they look the goods (thats how I justify it to myself). ;)

The trick is to use good oil, Das. Which I'm sure you are. 240F should be a walk in the park for anything half decent. Do you have a head temp sensor?

No head temp sensor yet - I know that it is certainly recommended...I figured I would see how this oil cooler goes with the oil temps, then will go the head sensor if necessary. Whilst we are on it, what oil do you use Peter? What do people recommend? For the initial break in I used a straight 30 weight Pennzoil (spelling?).

Castrol Formula 'ARRRRRRHH'

Big-bore performance, non-synthetic. ~28 bucks for five litres, but I've seen how well it looks after my innards after seriously abusing them. very happy. From what I understand, the better oils have stabilisers and additives that makes them both last longer, and increase the resistance to shearing under load. Steer clear of Woolworths or No Frills unless you're setting up an engine blow at a fete :cussing

I decided that it was way too much work (and would have taken a long time) to get the wiring for the cooler switch up behind the dash (would have to pull out amp rack etc) - so I hid the wiring and mounted it below the seat.

Finally managed to stop spending money on AN fittings and braided S/S line (hopefully) with the final two lines from case to cooler in shroud.
