So far so good - went for about a 45min drive and it didn't hit 200F whereas before it was up to 220F at times and on hot days up to 230F+ which is when I pulled over to give it a rest. I still think the tuning and timing is not spot on which may be contributing to the higher temps - I know it is not running lean but may try and get it on a dyno to do some more accurate tuning. Just need to find someone who knows what they are doing with dellorto jetting and vw engines around here or in brissy (with a dyno).

Buy a load of jets and play yourself.

No one is going to get it right - even with an hour on a dyno

Do it yourself and then you will understand and get it right

Cheers Barry - were do you source such jets? I haven't found a supplier yet apart from CB performance but I'm sure someone in Oz would stock them?

Carburettor Services.... although they're in Sydney shipping teeny bits of brass is quite cheap. you can spend a lot of money on jets if you're experimenting, but certainly no more than you'll spend frikking around with Dynos and EFI ;O)

Never played with Dells, so it would probably be of some help to Das if people had a ballpark figure for jets suited to a car his weight, capacity and altitude etc etc.

Anyone? BTW 'grats on your efforts, which are, as per, quite spiffy.

CARBURETTOR SERVICE CO PTY LTD
240 Parramatta Rd Burwood 2134 (02) 9747 4066

You can also start with 2 small sets of jets and a set of reamers.
NOT drills. Reamers will give a smooth edge. Drills give a rough edge.

Start small and "sssllloowwwlllyyy" work your way up - do a change and drive for a while.
Ream out when you are wanting to try up a jet size.
Go back to your other set when you want to compare.

When you are finished - buy that set of jets.

With idles - it is easier.
You carb will tell you when you have "best lean mixture" as the revs pick up when you are 2-ish turns out on the mixture screws.

You can buy just one jet and see what difference that makes to that cylinder. Move that jet to other cylinders to see that difference.

Runs out of puff a bit with the stock cam and very mild heads but it is a lot of fun. Future plans for the engine may include new cam, bigger p&c's (nikasils would be sweet, but $$$$), maybe fuel injection, but only time and money will tell. The less of either I have, the more likely it will stay as is for a while! :P

Well, I didn't really expect to part with the ragtop after so much blood, sweat and tears (ie. frustration/ satisfaction, hard work and money!).....but the time has come to hand it over to a new owner.

The rag is staying in Australia, even in Queensland....but I do not wish to divulge who the new owner is NOR how much he paid - if he wishes to let you know so be it, but I will keep the details confidential and will leave it up to the new owner (so please don't ask).

Firstly a huge thanks to my wife Katie for all her understanding and support....also to all the helpers along the way (Brad, Alan and co.)...finally thanks to the new owner for his understanding and flexibility with negotiations. I will be keeping my type IV, and the 1916 I had to sell will now go into the ragtop.

So there you have it....the engine transplant is underway - hopefully will have it done soon. Here is my engine slowly being disassembled to be removed...

The type IV has donated its mallory unilite and promaster coil, as well as all braided lines and AN fittings for fuel and oil.

The new owner passed on his serpentine pulley system which is in the process of installation (just have to change the two front alternator stand studs with bolts)....hopefully more progress over the weekend.

Thanks for following the resto along - the rag will have its final feature in VWMA next issue which I am looking forward to - it will be a great momento.

Cheers
Alan

Yep I'll be finishing the second rebuild to sell (the dark blue 1970 bug) - that will pay for my carport which will give me some space to start the panel eventually! I may have a couple of other "projects" which are part of the deal for the sale....so stay tuned ;)
