I hate to say it but better now than on your first run at Warwick.

It was a good night on the dyno, other than braking the box. This dose happen, i have a mountain of them. Don't look back, just keep moving forward,
either new parts or old, as long as it's on the road again soon, thats what i think racing is.
Glad we were able to fix the injector rails and the idle valve in this 3hr session, so only have mixtures to do.
Two steps forward one step back.
I even got to drive it on the dyno, man i have to appreciate that volksy turbo combo, sounds so sweet.
Better luck next time.

While the box is apart we might call on Mr Albins for some "goodies"......
Hopefully it is what we think it might be Troy after talking to a few today. Hopefully damage is minimual and not too much of an expense to repair.
Positive thing is Matt has done more in 3 odd hours to sort issues out and have the car run soo much better than the countless hours it sat and the
tiny amount of time it was on the dyno for the huge bill from the other crowd.
I have to admit when I got the phone call Troy sounded kinda calm considering and was actually sounding positive about how the car was running and
that all gremlins were fixed and sorted

gear must be on im guessing cause there no big bits yet just all small lengths like splines. i will try to get the rest of the box apart tomorrow and
post some pics..

and we pulled it all apart and aaron had a 1600 kombi 3rd gear which has the corse tooth that will fit so now the clean up and get in touch with
dangerous when he gets home to arrange to get it put back together. I will take some pics now and post soon.

Troy's Trans Repair
I think troy was very lucky only to have broken the third gear.
While it is apart, I did a few little things to make it as good as it can
be without going the Quaife route,
nor going for Albin gears(yet).
His trans alread had a 4 spider gear super diff fitted in a past life,
but was other wise stock
except for a too-tall 0,821 fourth gear from a late 1600 bus trans.(2550 rpm at 100km/h)
As seen in the picture above,
it stripped the fine tooth third gear.
In its past Troy told me he had the box rebuilt after the mainshaft bearing failed and 4th gear broke.
I think after driving to Valla in third gear with the dead bearing,
the third gear was alo weakened.
I have upgraded to the 1800 bus gears with a 1.26 third,
and 0.889 fourth.(2700 at 100km/h)
These are factory electron beam welded,
and I have used them with as much as 460hp.(for a good time not a long time).

The first gear in Troy's trans was the later model one,
but to help it some more I have replaced the plastic caged short rollers
with the steel caged ones from an early 40hp trans.
I also machined the 1st/2nd hub to control the end floatof first gear,
and added some oil holes.
Second gear also got a metal caged bearing and end float set on it.
Unfortunately there was some unexpected wear on the teeth of the side gears and spiders,
so I found some good used ones.

The new side gears were modified on the ends to remove the circlip groove.
I have made up some steel spacers and bolt-on caps to retain the CV flanges.
When the bolts are torqued,
it will help stop the wobble of the flange
that often breaks off the spline, in high torque applications.

The third gear end float was set,
and then the hub was modified to accept a thicker 2lt bus circlip.
This will stop the hub thrusting forward and burning up the 4th gear
as the end clearance changes.
I used a metal cage on 4th gear too.
This trans had been updated with an 091 mainshaft bearing,
so 4th gear needed to have some oil grooves added to the gear face. (just like 2lt bus).

This was a 1976 model trans and so it had the strongest "2-rib" side cover:
The final touch was to machine the nose cone flat, and add a steel thrust plate,
to help prevent the mainshaft bearing from thrusting under load.

For a low budget repair,
this trans should now be as strong as the next week link in the chain.....the CV joints.
The descision was made not to use Albins gears at this time
because troy prefered to wait and buy them to suit a future upgrade with a 2lt bus or Renault trans.
