Katoomba tune up
Hi all, I'm currently in Katoomba and the van needs a tune up. The hill was punishing for this van. I'll be doing the tappets and carbs tomorrow and
I was wondering if there are any other dubbers around who would like to host. I get some weird looks when I do it in the park. Also I may need a few
extra tools.
If you live in Katoomba or near by, or know of a great VW mechanic nearby, please contact me here or on my phone 0402499894.
Cheers,
Lewis

I started out this morning with a routine tune up. I checked the tension on the studs holding my exhaust manifold in, some were loose and one snapped
off. Thanks Midas, two weeks out of the shop and fucked. To make matters worse and better simultaneously I found the real exhaust leaks in the
muffler. Huge holes and cracks have come about after getting up the hills to Katoomba (pretty demanding for an old exhaust). I saw the guys at the
muffler shop, Mountain Mufflers, and they loaned me a socket and vise grips to get the exhaust and manifolds off. I got the snapped stud out, and
there was anothe rone not looking too good, so he came out as well. They might have the holes in the exhaust welded today, maybe not.
I found a guy, Kendell, who used to run Kombi Zoo (a parts shop). He now works at Repco and has all his old stock. I will be getting some type4 studs
tomorrow morning, and hopefully a patched exhaust. And plenty of sealant...

Also, the vacant lot at the bottom of the hill at Mountain Mufflers is quite shady, and a one eyes stray cat has taken a liking to my makeshift
campsite. I know he's a stray because I thought it was dead, and it very much looks dead, I'm yet to have contact with it. Rabies surely awaits me.

Good luck Lewis , and don't be afraid to just take it easy on hills and just cruise up them in 2nd , as it's better to concerve that motor than kill
it by overheating it .
I realise that everybody behind you will get the sh$ts but that's their problem for not cruising in a classic .
Don't let body work get in the way of real suspension travel

122'C is the highest she's ever been, on a 30'C+ day up the hills to blue mountains. Thanks Matt, it's nice to know I can go hotter if I need to
(jokes)
Also the cat has obviously died. It was sticking around like a horse after falling on the track, yesterday. Now there is no sign of it. A small
memorial will be held in it honour while my sealant dries.

Thanks dude. I fixed the leaky exhaust, for about 2 minutes, but it's manageable now. Hopefully the oil leaks and dust will come together and form
bricks over my exhaust leaks. Not likely
IWL_86: I'll let you know if I get into more trouble. I think I might camp steady at Mt York for a few nights and give the van some rest. Climbing
should be a good distraction.

Engine is… probably going to get me home. I would be so stoked to get a new engine, I definitely want to do more travelling in the van. Australia is
such a nice place.
I have suspicions that I might be getting a sunken valve seat, I'll know in another 1000km. Also the exhaust is looking like a tinnie in the freezer
for too long. Smells like fuel and farts, leaks a bit of oil. You know, it's a kombi.

Hi Lewis, if you suspect a receding valve seat, check the valve clearances before you start the trip home, if any have closed significantly that's
your problem. The only thing you can do is keep checking them to maintain a clearance. This is because, the worst thing that can happen is running
with no clearance, the valve overheats and literally burns. When that happens, it is common that the head of the valve drops off and if that was to
happen at 100km/h your whole engine will resemble that 2 litre you pulled down......not too pretty. Maybe call on Isaac, he's close by and is a
knowledgable Volksy dude.

I've had this problem before. I only suspect it because my cyl.3 exhaust valve had little/no clearance when I checked it 2 days ago. I'll be
checking again regularly, so far no change, but I'll be checking again after a big run. If I get the same problem I'll take the rockers off and
check with a ruler.

Sounds like your onto it mate. All I can add is not really for you to bother with a ruler, it's not a repaertable measurement, just use the adjusting
screw as your gauge against the others.
Good luck for the trip home.
