gearbox identification

I'm trying to identify the type of gear box I have, all I know so far is it's a double side plate, where do I find the identification numbers? (it's realy gunky at the moment) and what will they tell me?
Is there a reference book or web site to assist?
Thanks
Don

same side as starter motor just below and back from flange or axle towards gearbox mount , dc,ah , and so on then numbers, plenty of websites with info just type in vw gearbox codes.
Unless its early swing which will be numbers only early throw out bearing and different clutch cable arm , vw loved doing upgrades over the years
