Rules & Laws - moving to Australia
Hi guys,
I am located in Malaysia & own 2 beetles here. I plan to migrate / move to Australia (Sydney or Melbourne) someday & would like to know if
there are any rules against it? If allowed, what do i need to do & know? And how about a lowered beetle? Is it allowed?
Any websites or advise? Thx

Different states have different rules. Where are you moving to?
I read it on samba, so it must be correct.
Sometimes Volkswagen dealers sell spare parts. Amazing isn't it!

Getting your car shipped here would be a lot easier than getting immigration clearance. Just pay all the money for shipping, customs and
registration.
If you are one of these then it is possible to get a visa:
- You have a full wallet and are coming to study or
- Have a skill that Australia is lacking or
- Have close family here
Otherwise it is fairly tough to get immigration clearance.
( i think, I dont dont have experience )

Apologies, maybe i should be more clear. Moving to Australia should not be a problem as i hv relatives residing there.
It's what to do with my beetles that's worrying me. Selling them off here & moving would be my last option but too much of work & effort has
gone into them.
If I move it would either be to Sydney or to Melbourne. Thanks.

OK car wise, are your cars modified, if so tell us more about them.
Sydney and Melbourne are in different states and have different rules for modified cars

check the govt website, i think the rules are easier if u are immigrating and bringing in u personal vehicles compared to a local resident importing

Car importation laws and rules are federal not state. Once you are here and wish to register them the state laws are applicable you can sort that out
here once you get them over.
To bring in a personnel import ( a car you have owned or driven for the last 12 months )the federal rules are much easier than those for someone here
importing a car recently purchased.
But as stated first up get yourself sorted with a visa and then liaise with dotars here .

In his first post, one of the things he asked was "And how about a lowered beetle? Is it allowed?" That's a state issue.

Steve yes i read that, but he needs to get them into the country first. Then if and when he decides to register them ( many track cars for example
come here and are never registered ) he will need to deal with state laws then, he doesnt need a road worth to bring it into the country but he needs
to comply with federal import laws.
They are much tighter for someone here importing a vehicle than for some one bringing one with them.
They have actually tightened things up federally since I last brought one in and imports are supposedly to be non modified but many are still comming
especially from the US with huge mods. At any rate as i said the DOTARS rules for personnel imports are much easier to comply with.
So first port of google DOTARS.
