Administrivia: E-mail and password resets - mostly working!

Hi there

I've been working on improving why our mail is blocked by the major Australian ISPs. It turns out they have very aggressive and non-RFC compliant anti-spam controls. I'm working to tune our e-mail settings including:

a) rate limiting mail to particular ISPs to one or two e-mails per hour (!)

b) running multiple e-mai server instances to allow DKIM and SPF and multiple reverse IP addresses to work (these decrease the "spammy" score used by the particular antispam appliances that you see at ISP edge networks.

c) configuring and testing DKIM (domain key identified mail) so that the mails produced by the forum are digitally signed and can be confirmed as authentic by DKIM aware MTAs

d) working out if there are particular ISPs that are still stupid.

The list is as follows:

iiNet - refuses to allow us to clear the backlog to their server. There's about 30-40 mails outstanding. I will use back channels to try and clear this as honestly, they are wrong.

iPrimus - OMG IMHO these idiots shouldn't be allowed near the Internet. Tried calling them yesterday but outright refused to allow me to talk to the folks who look after their mail servers because I wasn't an iPrimus customer. I might prevent you from signing up if you are an iPrimus customer if I can't fix the mail backlog. You are probably missing a goodly percentage of all your e-mails.

Optus - these folks are more cluey, but run stupid software that is not RFC compliant. Mail is trickling through at the rate of about 1 e-mail per day. This obviously is not enough to allow for the average number of password resets.

BigPond - ditto, but the backlog to BP has cleared.

However, now that the backlog is gone, if you have mates you know can't get onto the system, please ask them to try now, and inspect their spam folder for mails from us. If you still get stuck, please phone me on 0451 057 580 and I'll personally reset your password and strongly recommend you use GMail or Yahoo mail instead.

thanks,
Andrew

Hi Andrew

I am a new member and really enjoy using this forum.

Am I correct in thinking that the automatically generated email notifications are still not working?

Yep, this is our e-mail system back up and functioning. I'll keep a close eye on it. It's not all of the notifications - it was hammering everyone hard so I deleted 3800 or so e-mails in the queue after we started getting blocked.

thanks
Andrew

Thanks to Barls, it looks like the backlog has been completely cleared! Wow!

If you know someone is still stuck for a password reset, please let us know so I can get 'em processed and back here! :)

thanks,
Andrew
