leaky 68

68 bug ... Drivers side footwell is soaked around the pedals, passenger side isn't as bad, mostly wet around where the floor pan meets the front panel... Anybody got any suggestions where to start? Found that the fresh air boxes drain hose wasn't attached... Fixed that, still leaks. Any common places to check? And suggestions?

Overnight and we had some pretty good rain over 2 days. I also wet it down with the hose in an attempt to spot leaks... Didn't work.

Check for water in the tunnel. I had the same problem a few years ago. Water spraying up from the road and puddles was entering the tunnel from underneath car, near front of transmission. Water would exit out where the pedal cluster enters the tunnel every time I turned left. Took me while to figure it out. Take out carpet/mats and take it for a few sharp left handers.

i had this issue, and it was in my weak windscreen rubber ! have a look at the condidtion of your windscreen rubbers, even try spraying the hose just on the window and have a look.

check under the bonnet as there are holes for water to escape under the windscreen rubber in the corners [also under rear window]

You can get some black silicon [silastic] and squeeze under the windscreen rubber... You don't need much except at teh bottom corners and where the wipers come out..
and naturally if any cracks in the rubber..
maybe across the top... depending on the age of the rubber..

cheers

Leaking through both bottom corners, silastic last night, wet floor this morning... But not asbad. Strong fuel smell too. Checked all the fuel lines on top and the bottom.. no leaks.. where does it go from under the tank?

the fuel tank breather goes from the tank up over the dash into a long white container then hose back to the left hand side of the spare wheel and thru the body underneath..

There is also a larger hose next to the filler that lets air into the tank while its getting filled with fuel..

ALL those cotton covered hoses v small small medium and large all need to be replaced with new hose... cotton covered or plain black oil hose.. that cotton covered hose cracks and lets the fumes out of the hose... if fuel gets to the split hose, it will spill out.. difficult to see the splits.. best to chuck it all.. very common,,,

the fuel filler hose does split into layers and ends up leaking too..
fumes or petrol if the tank is full

Lee your a champ. I've just ripped them all out and sure enough, cracked to hell. I'm a massive car enthusiast, but a bit lost on the old vw. Tend to second guess myself a lot. You've proved to be an absolute database of good info mate. Thanks again. And the rest on here, bloody good info and helpful too. Fixed my problems  thanks heaps... Happy dubber :D
