Sloppy brake pedal
G'day all.
Thought I'd find out why my 1959 Beetle brake pedal was so sloppy (no fun driving around in this weather), and found the brake pedal return spring
floating around doing sweet FA. I'm not sure if it is broken or not attached as it should be. Any thoughts?
Sorry the pics seem out of focus but this is the best i can do when reducing them down to 100K.

The leg of the spring on the left should be rotated forward and under the pedal assembly. You'll need to unbolt them from the floor to do it, and
recheck clutch cable and brake master cylinder pushrod adjustments afterwards.

I can slip the leg on the left under the assembly without undoing the bolts, so that it points to the front of the car but what happens to the other
end
? It appear to have a hook but I can't find what it attaches to.
Or do you mean that the leg on the left should be on the right and pointing to the front of the car?

No, stays on the left. The hook part will then put pressure on the pedal at the point where the master pushrod attaches. The spring is meant to keep
the pedal back towards the driver.

Thanks Matt i'll give it a go. In the mean time I was checking out Google images and came across this.

It shows the right hand arm with the hook, coming out in front of the brake pedal then going up and pulling the pedal forward. Is it possible that my
spring should look like this and it is broken?

looks like the spring is sitting there doing nothing..
photos were OK here..
remember that the pics from the US are LHD and entirely different to RHD actually LHD pedals wear out... and need rebushing etc..
because of the way they were made.. angle etc.. wear etc..
You would think that RHD would have been worse.. lol
seeing they were LHD originally.. lol
not sure whether the spring would be the same..
but Yours looks OK... the end is in the wrong place..
it is supposed to push the pedal towards You..
and there is a plate on the floor that stops the pedal coming all the way out [from memory]
