rack and pinnion conversion??


Hi guys, since my steering box is chagged and I have read that the TRW ones are no good does anyone know much about a R&P conversion,things like what rack to use,lock to lock yadda yadda..are the buggy ones up to the task for my circuit bug...I have searched the net but have not found sufficient material on the conversion...

Any and all info would be great..

Is definatly doable, alot of measuring and drawing to get it spot on.

The buggy racks such as wright and saco would be fine in a track car. ratios from 1 to 1.5 turns lock to lock, which is pretty short. (2 3/4 turns stock?) but alot of the buggy guys prefer it, improving reaction time. how big is your steering wheel? :D
If you are using it on a track I think it would be pretty good seeing as you have smaller tyres.

the OEM racks that are popular are old camira, 2000 ish daewoo larnos (what i have) and mk1 golf, check smileys thread. Problem is these are hard to get between stock shock towers.

BAJAWES used to have a huge thread on the subject, I used alot of the info within to get mine right. cant find the link right now, maybe someone else can help with this

Many ways to skin a cat doing this but most people find that a rack which has the tie rods attach to the centre of teh rack gives more clearance that a rack with the tie rods tacched to the ends. Also easier to change rod ends and the rack boots last longer as they only move linearly.

Volkszone is also a good source of info as loads of people have done the conversion over there.

Also, the vehicle isn't gonna be used on the road is it? If so then a vehicle engineer will need to sign off on the design and finished article.

It would be nice if someone set out a line up of standardized engineered rack conversions.

We have at least one person doing the same with brake upgrades.

There are a few kits available, most of the kits come out of the UK.
