Dropping a Bug


Hi Dubbers,

Two Questions if I may:

I have just purchased a 56 bug and plan to drop and narrow the front to fit 17" BRMs to look similar to this ( http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=85675&page=7 ). I would also like to fit disc brakes.

1. Can anyone give me any advice on other suitable combinations to achieve the above. I assume 2.5 inch drop and 2 inch narrowed beam??? I wish money was no object but it will be!

I was not planning on doing this straight away but I need to move it and the brakes are shot (apparently they Have been for a couple of years). I tried bleeding them and fluid just ran out of the front drums. I don't want to spend money on brakes that are to be replaced in the next little while but think I might need to?

2. Do I need to replace just my brake seals or the cylinders (I assume they come with the seals) and if so where do I get them I'm in Melbourne's Eastern burbs?

Are those 17" BRMs 205 PCD or 112 PCD? That will make a big difference with brake disc kit options and price.

There are more 112 brake options than 205 and they are cheaper too.

to get her rolling the wheel cylinders aren't too expensive. Vollks is probably the cheapest and can be bought online. Then VVDS in Sydney and Mick Motors in Brisbane.

Thank psimitar,

I want to retain the origonal 205 PCD and they are 17" BRM's.

I have but in new cylinders and they have made bugger all difference car only moderatly slows! I have discovered that the rear brakes are non existant as well.

I am going to put a new disc kit on it (as well as redo the rear) and am considering theses - http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Wide-5-Disc-Brake-Kit-Link-Pin-2-1-2-Lowered-p/w... - Has anyone had any experience with them? I have also seen the Jamar brakes advertised OS. Has anyone had any experience with these?

With each of the above does anyone know of an Australian distributor?

Just keep in mind any brake and suspension modifications will have to be engineer approved.

First of all I'd get the orig brakes working properly. When working properly hydraulically and the shoes adjusted correctly then the drums will pull the car up quite nicely. Only if you have a really HiPo engine would I bother with discs.

And as VW060 says, you need to get an engineers approval and it's best to do that before you fork out the cash on whatever you choose cos many engineers don't like the use of adapter plates to allow the wide 5 wheels to fit. They are quite retarded in this respect so you have to find one with a brain :lol:
