Was it an Aussie or German made type 3??
Does it have the large bumper over riders?? like the fastback..?

There were a few different models made in Germany, but I thought only the one in Australia.. they were trying to keep the prices down..
there was a 1500s notch/half back made in Australia..
it was called the twin S as it had twin carburetors..
unlike the 1500S made in Germany which was VERY deluxe.. [Early model] with cloth seats and trim.. etc

The 1500 Deluxe Notch is the smaller engine single carb model.

I think 67 Australia only but possibly 68 as well.

There was a 1600 twin carb notch for 67 and 68 as well.

I don't think there was any thing deluxe about it. Just the smaller engine and the badge.

The green one above has had the over riders and the S number plate light cover added.

I've got one of these too. It's a '65 model but it wasn't sold until July 1967. This bloke in the US seems to have an explanation...

http://www.holygrailgarage.com/1965_Australia_Notchback.html

I don't know if this is right, or just waffle to try and sell the car?

from what I have nutted out over the years. Deluxe seems to be an aussie term, and deluxe seems to be the pov pack notchback from the available range. So its got cut down options compared to the other models. But I don't think it the actual model name

If you go to carsales and a like the deluxe comes up as plain jane pov pack notchback.

And all this, I never actually seen any badge til that pic^ to backup the myth there was a deluxe type 3, but that is a 1500 not the 1600 the deluxe name refers to.

There is heaps of 3rd party literature that states a 1600 deluxe model for type 3. I have seen it in general parts books at auto stores before but I ignore it as they never refer them to the correct model names.

I bought my notchback as a vw 1600 deluxe  its actually a notchback.

ok so according to the brochure its the pov pack. So how is that exactly deluxe then?

To me is sounds as if its kind of like when other car makes use executive badge (sounds high class!) when in fact executive is always the shittest model.

makes sense :spin::rolleyes:

I think the name deluxe carried on to the latter notchs as well but as a general street? term.

I see carsales listings as deluxe for the late notch as well as carsguide, carpoint etc. but none of the late notches carry a badge and makes me believe its just a name that stuck around.

Even the person I bought my notch from said it was a deluxe. I was "yeah?... ok?!"

I read the USA story.. interesting..??
the factory shutting down while VW Germany did a stock take??

but its just a standard Aussie made 1500 twin S..

nothing deluxe about it.. apart from the badge..

They were Aussie unique.... better known as a Clayton special, the deluxe package included ... Chrome fresh air vent levers , chrome ashtray lip, chrome seat lever slide knob chrome seat lumbar knob, chrome seat back arms (tin cover), short reflectors (rear) chromed, a chrome cigarette lighter, chrome number plate light cover and a Deluxe badge. I have owned 2 Deluxe notches (1965 and 1966) one is still here in Melbourne, i haven't seen a deluxe fasty or Square and am pretty sure they were only notch backs.

I believe that both cars pictured above are ex Australian cars.

We didn't get N models as in pov pack ones here they were all pretty much the same standard, Vw Clayton's type 3 production apparently got into some trouble and was audited i believe that this was due to the Aussie cars being "Aussie Unique"

An N model in Europe would denote a pov pack, single carb, no chrome trim, really shitty interior, minimal carpet.

Aussie cars all came with trim, most had the twin carb motors unless an early 1500 with a single carb, pretty much all had the same level of interior.
