Speedo Cable differences

Does anyone have any knowledge or advice of speedo cable differences between an original connection to the back of a standard VDO odometer in a type 3 and the connection on the back of one with the optional trip counter? The spline off the latter and my cable for the original seem to fit into each other but not join and stay together. Is there a sleeve/thread that is needed or missing? I've been advised that a modification is needed to be made to hold it all together. But that doesn't sound very VW in design, and I've been advised also that there wasn't a difference required in cables. Any further advice or qualification of this would me welcomed. Thanks.

Hi

Australian made speedos had a smaller thread size on the back of the speedo, no difference other than that, you can swap the nut over from another cable.
