VW billycarts

I have been building a few billy carts for my kids and their cousins and yesterday they had their first run in the Brisbane Billy Cart races. All went well and they didn't fall apart.

I was hoping to race my proper (loose term) Herbie clubcar at the Leyburn Sprints next weekend but most of my spare time went into building these.. oh well there is always next year for Leyburn.

Carts

Donn and all,

I bought the red shell off ebay when I bought my Manx. I then made a mould and then the white one is a copy of the red. The white one is about half the weight of the red one but the red one has brakes.

I have a 4mth old, 2 yr old and 4yr old so am confident they will get plenty of use and abuse. I am going to make a blue one just so then all have one - am glad they turned out ok as the wife was into me about the fibreglass fumes - so it all made it worthwhile in the end.

Oh and if you think mine looks good - check this cart..

It won best presented - even the seat was leather.

They are great, keen on making something similar, excuse me for being bold would it be too much to ask for a picture of the (naked) frame if possible, thank you.

I don't have any photos of the chassis with the body off, but these shots from below will give you an idea. Not exactly a V8 supercar..

I built the white one first - and then as time pressure became tight and I ran out of scrap bits I took the quick option and bought the tierods and steering shaft off ebay for $100 for the red one - as they were the fiddliest things.

Bodies..

Sorry guys, whilst they probably only used $100 worth of fibreglass supplies (resin, matt, catalyst, PVA etc) the process was very time consuming as they were all hand laid. Apart from this its not worth me getting into trouble with the wifey on the fume front. Surprisingly like a few others on here I have a few other projects to attend to.

After I do a Blue one in a few weeks a mate is borrowing the mould - I will let you know if he is keen on doing any.

Oh and I think the steel was around $50 from Scotts metal and to source the wheels I scoured GumTree and bought about 4 or 5 kids bikes, ranging from $10-$20 each.

Cheers

Bodies

I bought mine second hand off ebay from a private seller who had Manxs. It didn't have a scratch on it and was like new.

I have seen them for sale at Beach Buggies Australia down the coast for $660 GST inc.

I can appreciate this as the time involved in making one is considerable along with the raw materials it is hard for people to appreciate that you also have a life to live with your family that you cannot put a price on
