Auto trans selector type 3


Most of you know I run a type 3 auto trans in my trike. I have a rolled up couple of wires (red with black stripe) cming from the trans selector. Its a good guess the wires are so the starter cant be started in placements other than neutral and park. The only other wires (orange) are for the reversing light and they are in situ,

Where do these wires go?(red/blk stripe) I assume they are earth connectors that connect when in park or neutral. therefore they might be a circuit breaker for the starter?? Where could they connect? My trike has a custom wiring design and I cant read wiring diagrams easily. Anyone help out?

If your wiring loom is custom- you and a multimeter better become good friends. Are the wires loose or terminated? Does your neutral start switch work as its meant to?i have a Type 3 auto and shifter in my Oval and I made a new loom for the shifter. I have my starter switch just behind the shifter, so needed a switched 12 volt wire to the shifter for starting and I bridged across from that for the reverse lights. Also ran a wire from the headlight switch for the illumination panel and just earthed the lights at the shifter.If your running a VW ignition switch- you will find the wire colour there that should be at your shifter.

Thanks for your reply nbturbo. Looks like I have two issues.
Firstly this is a pic of the selector from drivers side. The orange wires on the LHS are for the reverse lights. The red/black stripe wires on the RHS meet when the selector is in park. These two wires are not connected at all and I dont know what their purpose is.

Also the engine turns over in each selector position eg park, reverse, neutral, 1,2,3, whereas before I took my engine and auto out (engine is currently out getting reconditioned and auto had major serive and seal change) it would only start in park or neutral which was ideal.
Cant figure this one out.

I have some spare switches- I will dig one out and sus out what terminals do what. Check the brass slide on the lever is only touching one contact of the switch in Park, reverse and neutral.Will get back later tonight.

The selector hasnt been tampered with at all. I took the auto out for dismantling for seals and gasket renewal. But as there is only the kickdown wire that comes from the trans that would not have anything to do with the starter motor starting in the wrong gears.

Neither these unconnected wires. The ones in question red/black stripe are joined when the selctor is in PARK. For what purpose? So we have two problems

1/ what is the purpose of the wires on PARK
2/ How is the starter not connected in gears 1,2,3 and reverse? by what mechanism?

Your switch is a normal Type 3 switch.The 2 termianals you have with the red/black wires are only joined when the lever is in park or nuetral- so this then completes the circuit between the starter switch and the starter solenoid- conversely, if the lever is in any other gear you have no continuity to the circuit therefore no start.This all hinges on the switch being corectly adjusted.If you have a look at the backside of the switch(from where you took the pic) you will see 6 small brass pads.The 2 on the end where your red wires are and the 2 at the other end need to be in contact with the brass pad that is attached to the lever when in P or N. You can do a visual inspection or just use a test light.The centre 2 pads are for reverse lights and thats the logical positions as they mirror the lever position.I dont understand how its starting in every gear because when in D or 123 there are no contacts anywhere near to be touched.Pull one red wire off and it shouldnt start in any gear.The switch is deceiving how its constructed, but the 2 front and the 2 rear pads are connected inside the plastic housing and are actually insulated from the 2 centre reverse light contacts.See how you go.

That makes a lot of sense to me. The reason why it is starting in every gear must be that the other ends of the two red/black stripe wires are not connected to anything. So they must/should be connected to the starter/starter solonoid somewhere. The contacts on the selector are 100% ok.

This would explain why it starts in every gear because it hasnt got a circuit break because the wires arent conencted. Ok. now I need to fins the solonoid. My starter is a geared down type and I'll have to search for the wiring ...hoping to find where these two wires go.
Thanks mate. If you know where the red/black wires end up - please let me know. egis there a relay? I've never seen a solonoid but there must be one I presume.

Ok, had a good look. Starter is a Toro performance type.
Two wires from it go to the 4 terminal relay. At the 4 terminal relay one terminal goes to earth. Another wire from the loom (red with black stripe) goes into the loom to where ever. Too late tonight but might scout around to see if there are any connectors that have been disconnected.

The red/black wire will be one from the lever switch. The other red black wire on the lever switch will go to the starter switch.They have just put a relay in the circuit to stop any large current draw thru the, lever start switch- not really that important on your ride- but its there now.Did u pull one wire off and try to start it?You will have another wire on the relay going to the starter solenoid and the 4th wire going to a 12 volt source somewhere.

Its illegal to by pass a nuetral start switch- fairly obvious why.

Yes, very. I've found it.

The neutral/park switch was bypassed in error. Dont exactly know why but I remounted the relay to a better spot.

Those red/black wires go from one wire to to starter solonoid and the other to the realy. Simply it breaks the circuit on the gears, reconnects them when in park and neutral.

Works a treat now. Thanks you so much nbturbo. This is why we have forums.
