Taking the chassis for a joyride!


Ok, so the transmission and engine are again attached to the chassis and I wanted to take it for a little joyride around the block. But I don't really know what I'm doing wrong to get it running.

First I attached a positive battery cable to the starter and a cable from the positive side of the starter to B+ on the regulator.

Then I attached the green wire from the distributer to the negative side of the coil and the blue wire from the positive side of the coil to the positive side of the battery.

Once I filled the float with petrol it fired right up using a screwdriver to jump the starter and ran for a few seconds. Then I decided to connect a jerry can and some fuel line so I can keep it running. However once I connected the fuel line to the jerry can I not get it to start again ( I am getting fuel now to the carb).

After cranking the engine for a while I noticed the coil became hot, I'm thinking it is the cause of the problem. I disconnected the middle plug off the distributer to see if it would spark off the fan shroud but nothing. Did I do something wrong to fry my coil?

Anyone got any ideas? I really want to take it for a short spin :crazy:

YOu wired it right but shoulda put a switch in line with the coil +ve feed as leaving the coil powered up but not sparking can cause it to overheat. Try again once the coil is stone cold but if no spark then either the coil or condenser may be toast :(

Hmmm I think you are right, I did have everything connected up while I was doing the fuel line and setting up the fuel filter. It must have heated up the coil in that period and ruined it, I just went out and tried it with the coil cold but no luck and still no spark from the coil wire to the tin. Looks like I'll be ordering a new coil and a condenser while I'm at it, Cheers!
