65 Beetle - First Beetle

Hi all,
Some may recognise this Bug,
Bought from a member via a WTB add.

Going to be a father / sons project for me and my boys, who are old enough to start wanting to learn mechanical skills.

I've been down the resto road before with Mini's and Early Holdens, so have a fair idea of what to expect. Just a beetle newbie.

Everyone likes photos, so here it is in its new home...

Very nice, I hope it gives you and the family many happy moments, and not too many head-scratching ones.
All the best, Rob.

Looks like a great project! Where abouts are you? I'm at Carina Heights (near carindale), would love to give you a hand finding parts etc if you're only just down the road!
Cheers,

Welcome to the club but be warned it usually means you end up with several. I was only gonna have one beetle now have 2 beetles and 2 kombis.

Just enjoy the ride!

68 Baja - It's a growing pain!
58 Baja ute - and the pain spreads!
85 T3 Kombi - still growing
89 T3 Kombi - parts car

Thanks

Hi all,
Thanks for the welcome.
Quick Question.

If I want to buy parts overseas ( USA for example.), what year should i say the car is.?
As if i understand it correctly, VW Australia was stamping their own bodys for a number of years and didnt incorporate design changes that were introducted O/seas.

Cheers,

Busy Saturday

Will be a slow project, goal is to get the body sound, then roadworthy.
Register it and paint later on down the road.

But plans can and do change..

So week 1 saw car come home.

Week 2 little bit of rust investigation, removed LHS guard to scratch around, found a bit of bog hiding tin worm.. Nothing un expected, probably even a little bit better in that VW repair panels are so easily available compared to previous cars I've worked on.

Week 3 down to business..

So ordered all the panels, etc if needed online..
Most everything was in stock in Australia.

So clean up and touch up to engine tins, pan and rims are next while I wait for my deliveries..:crazy:

Hopefully the GC super swap tomorrow yields some goodies....

Floor Pan

Removed the old floor pan, looked like it was a replacement itself, as the outer edge of the original floor was still spot welded to the tunnel.
Any way out with the old....

In with the new, used pre marked lines on tunnel to ensure new pan mount holes lined up..

After what seems a long wait, I actually sourced the heater channel ends I wanted locally.
Irony is next day the ends I'd ordered online turned up 4 weeks ahead of projected arrival.. :spin:

Been that long I've forgotten how to load photos..

Cheers for the feedback mate.

Next item on the agenda is to do a body to pan test fit. (Fingers crossed my measuring was right.)

Then it's finish off the pan related items, like a dual circuit brake master cylinder, front disc brake conversion, etc.
Plus replace the worn cables, half shaft boots, clutch throw out bearing, etc. etc. before mating body and pan for good.

Might even fit sound matting to inside of body while it's separated. :)

Depends on cash and time.. Like always. :starhit:

Ground hog day..

So spent a full day on the Beetle and knocked off today exactly where I finished yesterday.
Some goose didn't ensure the crank end play was correct. (Me). So it was engine off, break a mounting stud and get better from there.

Anyway, all sorted and back together. For photo, refer to above post.

More.?

Bit more on the Beetle this weekend.
Dynamat on bulkhead and on rear.

Engine timing to be investigated, timing marks not lining up when timing by ear v's timing light. May have to break out the manual..

Btw, if you ever do this, don't buy the Dynamat roller, buy a "wallpaper seam roller" it's less than $5 from Bunnings or Masters, where as the Dynamat roller is $30 or $40.

Long time no post

Hi all,
Been a while but have been reasonably busy on the bug when I could get the time.
Got body back onto the pan, but didn't account for the adjustable beam to have a max height set too low that the tyres rub. Drop spindles and disc kit pushed the hub out, with beam as it is makes the car un-driveable.
