Is there a correct way to replace a cracked knob? or is a hammer the go!

did one of these many years ago on an old Austin, after breaking one accidently, on examination I found that it had a sort of clip ring inside the
knob that expanded and then cliped over and into a groove on the metal shaft when the knob was pushed onto the shaft, that made it relativly easy to
get the new one on but as I had no need to get the old one off (that was what accidently started the exercise ) I can't say if the old one would have come off using preasure in the opposite direction. If you
have new ones to put on then the new one may give you a clue or if you carefuly cut through the old one you may find the answer to the problem.

I you want to get a new one anyway, then have a look at it when it arrives, then post up pics of that too.
That way I know what they look like too.

I'm the only knob here!
Donn, I was lucky and got a packed of mixed sizes all new old stock. If I have some left and you need any I'll let you know.

Thanks for the offer but I have no need for them, just curious as to where you would get them, doubt if they will suit my Caddy or '76. Cab, def
won't suit the buggy. let us know how you get on.

I have replaced the knob on a good winder handle, using a dash switch knob.
Carefully remove the damaged one by cushing it in the vyce, or similar. Wire brush the steel pin - it will have splines - and make sure it turns
nicely. Drill the 'new' knob to 8mm dia.X 14mm deep, taking a lot of care! I drilled mine in the lathe. A couple of drops of Supa Glue on the pin
[don't get any where it turns around!], and quickly press the knob on.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!
