Gear boxes - Type 1 v Type 3 swingers

Hi Guys,
does anyone know if a type 1 early swing axle gearbox is as strong as a type 3 swing axle box? Or are they the same?

I am installing in a 1960 Baja, but not for crazy offroad stuff just for turning over large wheels in the sand (32" tyres). Just running a 1600 tin port.

I have used type 3 boxes in the past for the wide axles and bigger brakes, but recently damaged the diff.

If I put the wide axles into a type 1 box would it be similar to a type 3 box interns of strength?
Cheers
Mark

Dangerous on here would be the best person to ask cos he re-builds VW boxes for all uses.

Just from the fact though that the T3 is a heavier vehicle then I'd say the T3 are the better box. Also, IIRC the early T1 boxes don't have welded 3rd n 4th gears so can shear under load more easily than the later boxes.

Thanks for your replies. Ill try the wide axles in the type 1 box and see how it goes.
