Barry,
You can get a new key from VW dealer. They can access the 'secret pin code' needed to reprogram the new key. OR
Get from a donor car the Key/s, ignition switch, door and boot locks, computer and immo box.

Can't you manually put a code in?
I read it on samba, so it must be correct.
Sometimes Volkswagen dealers sell spare parts. Amazing isn't it!

I have been told by a VW dealer that if you use a non genuine key on a modern VW then plug the car into a VW diagnostics computer the diagnostics will
detect the non genuine key and shut the motor down. The only way to get it going again is with a new genuine key and computer to suit. No idea whether
that applies to a Mk3 but something to consider
