New 69' Fastback Project with fire damage.
Been hunting for an early fasty secretly for years now until I kept spotting one turn up next door did it occur to me that I wanted one more than I
thought and sooner! Turns out the neighbours friends had one, so it would randomly show up. I would hear it start up, run outside everytime and watch
it drive off ha. Loved it.
So I began to hunt, I say hunt because there really isn't any early ones for sale. One or two on gumtree and other classifieds but they are chasing
crazy money that I just could not justify. I started posting WTB listings in all the facebook groups and a few guys messaged me saying they would part
with thiers. Again chasing too much coin for me.
One guy who works at a Perfomance VW place here in Melbourne said he had one here for a while that he was selling on behalf of a customer of his.
A fuel line had split and caused a fire in the engine. I looked at the photos and initially thought it was too much work. A couple of weeks went by,
and I found myself going back to those photos and looking at them over and over. Every day. So I went out and took a look at it. Turns out it wasn't
as bad as it looked.
It had the obvious fire damage to the engine and the rear panels but other than that she was all there. Very straight, minimal rust and a pretty cool
rig.
Interior was all there, looks like it had been redone, red carpets / seats the lot. Will come up mint with a clean and some TLC.
Body has all been done too and resprayed at some stage. Again came up semi decent with a quick clean.
Anyway, I had it towed home to ours yesterday in the rain. And began cleaning it and dismantling the engine.
Plans will be to get it running, fix what needs to be fixed for a rwc. Then lower it on original wheels and have it as a fun weekend car on a nice
sunny day. The ragtop is also super rad!
Couldn't be happier.
Here are some quick photos from yesterday. Enjoy.

That clean semi-shaven look of the back of your lowered fasty is very good.
Almost seems a pity to spoil it with a number plate.
Good luck, looks like it could be very nice.

If you sell it to me now (uhhmmm, please? LOL!), this would then make the 4th ACVW I've rescued after fire damage! Hahahaha, I love them too!
It'll be a nice ride man, enjoy.

Oh really? so you've saved 3 from fire damage?? How does it keep happening?
Cheers mate, looking forward to it. Keen to get it running first and rwc. Then will work on cosmetic things.

Know of another fastback that had fire damage, that black gunk is quite hard to remove so stock up on plenty of elbow grease

Time to clean this all up now, having removed all the ash underlay / carpet.
Any tips on the best solution here? To get it ready for paint.

i dont think you will regret it.
i had my original dash reskinned and it was sh**house.
it shrunk the dash by half an inch. i know it doesnt sound much but the gauges wouldnt fit back in.
cost me $520 which i got back luckily...
its not the exact dash for the panelvan as i didnt have blank strip in the middle of the speaker grille but it looks and fits 100 times better than
the reskin.

Small update :
Added a 1.5mm steel firewall today, sprayed the inside of it black with sound deadening spray paint.
Ignore Battery ( just holding it up because I didn't have an extra pair of hands to help.
Made a thin mdf piece to go over top and then have placed insualtion / sound deadening mat on top of this. Should be quiet hopefully!
Also tidied up the engine mounts:

Update:
Grabbed another 69' fasty. It was local and cheap and advertised as a running engine, just needed a battery and a key. So we hot wired it, with some
time / persistence and start ya bastard we got her to fire up.
Will be pulling the engine / box out tomorrow hopefully and then putting it into the main one. The body on this second one was a bit of work.. the
other fire damage one overall is in better nick.
I will take the bumpers, the popout passenger window, headlights etc off it and then try flick what's left.

Update:
Finally tidied up all underneath where it had burnt off and started to surface rust. Wire brushed it all and then used a rust converter / primer. Then
coated it in an underpody paint, which sprayed really nicely and has a nice oem texture to it. Also sound deadened under the rear fender and removed
the rust under the rear popout window. Trying to get this bloody popout window back in is a mega pain! Losing patience..
Here are some pics:
Also grabbed a rear bumper at the swap meet which came up alright with a quick steel wool. Will shine nice with a polish.

Nice work mate I'm currently semi restoring a 68 fastback too. Like you just focusing on the rw and get it on the road before I start playing with
it. Be good to keep in contact mate I'm down in Melbourne. Not sure how to post pics from my phone here but I'll shoot you some pics soon. Keep up
the good work. Joe
