VW gearbox drawings

Does anyone know of where I could find a decent schematic drawing of a vw gearbox (both type 1 and type 4 / kombi if possible) ? Something that shows internal arrangment is what I am after.

The post about the vw gearbox with extended pinion shaft to convert to 4WD has me thinking. I am a mechanical engineer, and I probably have the access to the people and gear to get this sort of thing done if I can get access to a drawing.

Thanks in advance,

Doug

Doug
Looked at that today with dave Birchall. Hes actually has some nice A5 size drawings. The 1500 gearbox would work for conversion as the shift lever comes out above the pinion shaft centreline. Machine a new pinion shaft with extended end with a spine and the slip on a universal joint and you have it......Modify the endcover with a weld on boss for a lip seal (no additional output bearings required as the existing tapered roller bearing will be perfect)
I like it, I'll photo copy some drawings to A5 and get them to ya. Whats ur address.

I have pictures but not drawings

I'd like to see those A5 pictures though. Any chance of scanning them?

excellent :)

Great - I was hoping someone would have some drawings. If you wanted to mail a photocopy to me, that would be awesome, my address is 2 cranshaw mews, Atwell, W.A, 6164. Or alternatively, scan them and email them to me (sweetmd@az1.bp.com).

Next problem would be the front diff (I would figure on using a 1303 / 1302 with golf strut conversion). Any ideas on a suitable diff (need to be the same ratio as the vw one) ?

This is an email I got from a guy who built a 4wheel drive rally bug in the states. Check out his site for good pictures etc..

Hello Stephen,

I designed the nosecone and had a friend cut it out on a manual mill. The innards were pretty straightforward. The guy who does the VL6 thing in Oregon told me about the bits that would make it work.
If you were to pay a shop to machine the nosecone, you'd be into them for around $1500 just for that.
All the drive components were reliable except for the gears in the transaxle. They couldn't handle the ~400 horsepower the engine put out on 18lbs boost. Then I got aftermarket gears and shafts from Rhino (Australia) and never had another problem. The front diff was a Datsun 280Z rear diff turning backwards. I did run the driveshaft through the tunnel to a disconnect box made from another chunk of aluminum and using VW parts inside. This was so I could disconnect the front diff for extended street driving.

Thanks for the kind words,

Dave's car's rad. Imagine how good a 4WD Baja would be offroad! Just kidding;)

Did he ever measure the acceleration of that thing?

Oh yeah..I like this kinda talk.....
The drawings are A2 or something, that is bigger than an A3 sheet (1 mtr x 1mtr ?)
I'll get em copied at our drawing office and get em to ya next week. 2 big to email! Looks like a 2ltr Kombi box will be ok as well, perfect.

4WD 1303S Overlander - in the making :)

Wes, great minds think alike. I miss the ground clearance of my '57 baja. I'm thinking 2ltr kombi box (or 1500 as previoiusly mentioned) in my 1303, golf front struts, 3 " lift kit, 31x10.5 r15 desert duellers on all four wheels, and of course the 4WD conversion. What a beastly little beetle that would be :)

Speedster356 - thanks a ton for the drawings, I owe you one. Will be checking the mail in eager anticipation every day next week :)

So a 280z diff has the same ratio as the 2ltr kombi box eh ? I would imagine that subaru rear diffs might be suitable also, ratios dependant ?

Doug, just be careful using struts for offroad, they are very weak and will need reinforcement.

Speedster, I thought the drawings were only A5. A2 is a bit different. Are they to scale, or dimensioned? If they are I would certainly be interest in a copy. I would probably try to redraw them in Autocad to make and electronic copy that everyone can access.

Now theres an idea. Sounds like the drawings are A2, but either way, any drawing is better than no drawing (seeing as I currently dont have a 2ltr kombi box to pull to bits).

Yeah I had thought about the strut problem. They would be good enough to get me going, but if I ever got serious about it you are right, I would have to get some decent ones made up.

Guys and gals, I found this shop on the web which has quite a good lot of assembly drawings (no dimensions or anything) of the various VW tranny's.

http://www.longenterprises.com/diagram_folder/diagramlist.htm

Have a look if you are interested what is inside your transmission.
