Tie Rod End
Can anyone tell me what the part number for the tie rod end for the steering damper with the left hand thread .My CB parts list book says its part
number 114 415 313Z but I have been told that there is no such number, The tapered shaft that goes through the Pitman Arm has a diameter of approx
12.5 mm Dia to 13.5 mm Dia and the nut fits a 19mm ring spanner. The length of the LH thread section is 85 mm from the centre of the hole the damper
goes into to the end of the thread. I was also told that its a 6 volt beetle part, but the shaft that goes into the Pitman Arm from a 6V beetle the is
approx 10.8 Dia to 11.8.Dia HELP!

Thanks for that ,but I have talked to them and they can only get me one with a 100mm long LH thread and it is too long this would mean I would have to
cut 15mm out of the centre of the tie rod and weld it up (which I am reluctant to do) or cut 15 mm off the LH thread and get it threaded further down
the shaft ( and I don't know anyone in my area who has the machine that can cut a LH thread ) Maybe there is something I am missing ,there must be
the right part somewhere, this front end has never been modified.

I have seen those tie rod ends with the larger diameter taper-reckon they might be on ball joint beams. If the end VVdub can sell you fits, but is too
long in the thread-cut what you need off the thread,or cut what you need off the track rod on the other end and re- thread the RH thread end.Should be
plenty of people around with a RH thread tap.Or do as I did recently-got onto Ebay and bought a LH thread tap.

I understand what you are saying nbturbo and i guess that is my last resort ,but there must be a right bit ,some one today said it might be off a
Karmann Ghia ( seem to remember about 30 years ago someone saying they used some bits off them ) so I will keep trying for a couple more weeks.
Thanks for your imput.
Regards Arty.

Arty,
I have a secondhand tie rod end here which may suit.
But first, what is the diameter of the LH thread of your tie rod?

I checked my front end today- strange- it all looks like 6vt Beetle stuff except for the tie rod tapered spindles. They are the larger size like the
late ball joint ones. Will be keen to find what you end up with. The rest of the tie rod is the same dimensions as the early Beetle .

Hi Arty
The outers are definitely the bigger (Later) tie rod ends.
The book says 311 415 811B and 812B, (now 811C & 812C)
I don't have original inners but I believe the inners were always the smaller (early) beetle ones, but there may have been some later ones too. You
can use the other pitman arm with earlier spline and larger holes.
Parts book says inners are 114 415 813Z & 821Z (with damper).
The Z usually means they're "special" in some way, but I don't know how?
According to CIP1 there are only 2 tie rod ends with steering damper holes.
311 415 813D (early small taper) & 131 415 813E (later large taper)
It there's another one I'd sure like to know what it is.
Let's know what you find.
Cheers
Tony

Well Tony you have the answer then- the tie rod on my front end is identical to an early one but for the larger tapered spindle. The pitman arm also
looks the same but with the bigger holes. I forgot to look at the ends on the steering arms- guessing they will have large tapers.
