1976 T2 Kombi 2L Camper

I've copy and pasted this off Kombiclub because Im slack :p

Hi my name is Gary and I just bought my first ever VW, dragged it back to perth from Kalgoorlie, Unfortunately it's not running and so far I can't figure out the problem, some kind of timing issue I think... (yes I bought it not running and it was not a bargain lol) but it does have a new motor and I was a little worried upon reading these forums about the particular engine builder where this motor came from (VW engineering Queensland) but I will get there eventually, hey it looks great even though the paint job is not the best, it has very little rust and the rust it does have I will get on top of and fish oil the rest and the indicators don't blink, hmmm

Im starting with the basics, ive emptied the fuel tank and put new stuff in and now Im changing the oil, spark plugs, coil and putting in a new electronic distributor.
Already has new leads and https://www.justkampers.com.au/weber-single-carb-conversion-kit-for-t2-bay-an...

Family is already dreaming of all the holidays we can take in it hehe.

Well Im as happy as a pig in mud and a kid on christmas day :D

IT RUNS !!

put the new electronic dizzy in, new spark plugs checked the grounds, changed the oil and new fuel, now I just new to set the timing, need a new timing light though as mine is crusty and old cheap crap.

Bad points about the van:

1) Steering is really bad, im mean wtf....
2) brake booster is not connected, might be stuffed will connect it and find out if I need a new one.
3) Gear shifter is crap, feels like there is no bush at all, will get a new one.
4) indicators are finicky, fuses.
5) Need a new wiper motor (ordered and on the way)
6) Need to replace fuel lines and breather lines.....

Ive ordered a new brake booster as Im unsure what the old one is like but if its 42 years old then its got to go.

And Id like to get the steering box rebuilt and need a new drag link.

Hey Gary

Welcome to the joys of Kombi ownership.
Before you jump into replacing or rebuilding the steering box - there are several things to check first.
No 1 - is the flexible coupling - replace it anyway unless its brand new
No 2 - tie rod ends, draglink, centrepin any play will be amplified through the steering wheel.
If any of these are stuffed a new steering box will make no difference.

The gear shift or what I've heard it called "stirring the porridge" - there are several bushes and unfortunately as I found out to late many of them can only be replaced with the engine out - so that's something to remember.

Enjoy your Kombi when you get it going. Cheers.
