67 bug cooling
Hi all new to the forum so apologies if rehashing.
Have a 67 bug only since march, registered and runner etc but certainly a long term project for fixing up. Done some basics general service ie oils,
plugs leads changed to elec ignition, valves etc. Put on standard 2.5 drop spindles and disc brakes on the front having some clearance issues with
that but never mind.
Anyway question is, the engine bay missing the rubber seals etc to aid cooling. The channels are pretty stuffed in that trying to do with the motor
in be near impossible I think and I really don't want to the pull the motor at this stage as it will open a big can of worms I think but leaving
alone should save the dramas for now. Eventually the whole thing will be blown apart and engine most likely replace for a 1500-1600 but thats a fair
way down the track.
I was thinking of getting some of that exhaust wrap to put around the muffler etc and for temporary get some of that aluminum heat shield stuff that
you can cut and manipulate and screw in around roughly where the rubber should be. Anyone done/ used similar before and helped?
As I say eventually the whole car will be blown apart and panels, rubber etc etc will be replaced but just going to start getting the majority first
bit by bit before start that so going to be a while, but at least the wife can still run it around occasionally be luck for once a week gets the car
out for a run but being in qld certainly hot.
Anyway thank you in advance for any help, suggestions you may have. I suspect I'll have many questions along the way.

Hate to say but anything but the proper setup in the engine bay is a waste.
The wrap only rots your exhaust.
You really need to set up the seals

Thanks for that, had hoped obviously that it would be ok as a temp measure but looks like have to bite the bullet sooner than hoped

Barry is right the air cooled motor relies on cool air not recycled hot air from under the car. Take a little time and replace the engine bay seal
they can be done with the engine in place with a little care & patience, remove the rear tray 1st then with a thin screwdriver remove the hard
ened seal bit by bit, realign the retaining section, dust it and the new sealing rubber with talcum powder and work it into the groove, if you are
incredibly lucky the rubber will slide along the groove, if not it is a matter of working it in with a blunt screwdriver. The time spent will be worth
it and ir will also make you appreciate the engineering of the vehicle.

the rubber seals are cheaper than an engine rebuild,
you need them especially in Qld heat
