$200 - $250 should give a whole range to choose from. I've had Kickers in the past in my bug - they were good. I've actually got a relatively cheap pair of Panasonics in the bug now, and they are brilliant !!! Seem to work with the space behind the seat as a bit of an enclosure giving some wicked bass extension for 6 x 9's

I read somewhere that 6x9s aren't as good as round speakers for sound quality, something about the shape changing the sound...
Its your choice really, 6x9s or just 6's. Go for 2 or 3 way speakers. Sony, Kenwood, Pioneer are the brands that I use, but since you have the sony HU, I would go for sony speakers.

i dont like sony for sound performance!!!i would use alpine, kenwood, pioneer etc!!! i find that the 6x9's out of AU and BA falcons are great for sound!!! if u can find some they would be great!!
depending on the output of ur headunit u should easily run 4 speakers off it and no need to get an amp!!! plus go to a sound dedecated shop to get speaker wire (proper thick stuff) and measure how much u need itll make a difference from the crappy thin speaker wire!

i can build a box of MDF for free .... should i put a box behind the parcel area and a frame with material stretched over it ontop so they cant see the speakers?

or not bother with the box?

im going to go crazy with the sound deadening . . . . bitumen paint and foam ... will also help inhibit rust
