flywheel
Hi everyone!
What will I need to do to a type 4 flywheel to get it into a type 3 IRS gearbox? (which I think is the same as an IRS type1 item)

there the same Outside Diameter and from memory the same teeth for the ring gear which means the starter will match.

The 2lt pressure plate will be too deep for the type 3 bellhousing, only the 1800 and smaller flywheels will fit.
The input shaft on the type 4 gearboxes are longer than the beetle ones, this is cos the pilot bearing for the input shaft is further in the engine,
in the end of the crank area. So basically your short type 3 input shaft won't reach in far enough.
The solution is to either use the longer type 4 input shaft, or as you said put a pilot bearing in the flywheel itself to suit the short shaft.

well I have done the opposite a couple of times. I have put type 1 engines in type 4 gearboxes. So I have the opposite problem of the input shaft
being too long to fit into the type 1 gland nut pilot bearing. So the solution in my case is to swap the input shafts over. The 1600 kombi box has the
same set-up, a kombi box with a beetle length input shaft, cos the 1600 kombi has a type 1 engine.
So I don't see why it wouldn't work going the other way. Swapping the input shaft in a type 1/3 gearbox is more of a pain than swapping it
in a type 2 box though. That's why most people just go for the pilot bearing in the flywheel I guess.

Hi
The 210 & 215 flywheels fit the best, the 228 can be made to fit but you need to hackout the bellhousing. I just used a normal VW spigot bearing
and had the flywheel machined to accept it as a press fit.
