Does size really matter?
Is there anywhere in here, or on the net, that I can detimine what size/type engine is in my '68 Beetle.
Sorry for the seemingly dumb question but VW mechanics are thin on the ground here in the bush.

Well if its a 68 and still a stock car then the engine will be a 1500 single port.

Thanks vw54. The running gear may be stock but the body isn't. If I could figure out how to post a pic you'd see what I mean.....convertible

Like vw54 said,but its 50/50 whether its stock or not,engine number will tell you what it was 35yrs ago,who knows how many linebores,piston and
cylinders,and cylinder heads its had since then.Or it might be like my 1300 when i pulled it down still running its original pistons and cylinders but
totally knackered.So in conclusion its possible theoretically that its a 1300,1500,1600,1641 and you cant tell which till you pull the heads off,OR SO

I prefer my version (Porche) a 'Porsche' is the real thing :-)...and yeah only 1 carb with original oil bath filter...an empty bath when I
got it !

Dam just had a STROKE of genious,i know how you can tell if its a 1300 or 1600 without pullin everything to pieces,EASY,take it to a dyno and if it
makes 33.1hp or thereabouts on (SHOOTOUT MODE) its a 1300 and its knackered,if it makes 34hp its still knackered but its a 1500 and if its got over
38hp its a 1600, EASY.:thumb |

Hmm, one of my other driveway blockers is an old '78 V12 Jag with a Supra 5spd,and I was a real bastard I'd stick that on the dyno and send
you the results :-)

naw, thats reasonably fresh.
Its done a season of racing but I will freshen it up after new year.
We use a bog stock 36Hp carb (28PCI) so it is mostly in the heads and the cam lobe centres. Just gotta get the right combination.
Evidently, one of the guys here is getting 48 HP!! That is really big for a 12 with a standard cam!
The dyno we are all using is electromagnetically strapped and evidently close to the last word in chassis dynoes.
The operator is also well experienced and race cars are trailered from all over the state down to his tiny workshop.
So we hope we are getting meaningful results.

Don't panic - the only difference apart from the piston/cylinder set (which you'd change anyway) is the machining of the the heads, and
you'd find the price of new single port (1500/1600) heads rather attractive once you added up the cost of rebuilding the old ones...
