look at the engine and just under the gen stand there will be a number starting with a letter or two.. see what you have and compare it to this
thread, its a fairly full listing of engine codes and what size and year they would be

thanks for the info. to me all the motors look the same, with the exception of type 3 but i am lead to believe under the tinware they are just bettle
motors. i will check the inlet base numbers and check the link....thanks again

anyways, her beetle has NO letters before the engine number on the gen stand. only 9 numbers.any ideas??
have I seen type 3 engines with the number across the top of the case, in which case ours will be covered by tin?
