type 3 crapping itself daily..what to do???
Hey, i was wondering if anyone could give me some advice regarding what to do with my type 3.
It's first week back at uni and i've just spent $350 on text books...so i'm reluctant to take it straight to the mechanics cause
it'll have to go straight to the credit card....
so i'd be grateful for any ideas....
basically what's happening is...the t3 splutters and back-fires/pops, basically craps itself for nearly the entire journey and i can't
hardly get into third
however if I warm her up in the driveway for about 15minutes prior to driving it is usually ok...
i don't mind warming it up, its just sometimes this isn't possible (if i am not at home or whatever)
and amyway, i never used to have to warm it up for that long!!!!
also, its just getting worse...its been like this for about 3 weeks...but yeah, getting worse.
i first noticed it after filling up with premium unleaded one time. i just assumed i had stuffed up the mix ( i use a lead supplement thingy
recommended by my mechanic).
is it something to do with that do you reckon???
also, it had been sitting for nearly 2 years while i was overseas....i spent a fair bit of time getting it one the raod again, and it was serviced
just before christmas. but was wondering maybe has water gotten into the fuel tank (when i stored it the fuel tank was full )
also, a couple of weeks ago i remembered that my brother had done a full oil change and i hadn't checked it since......freaked out because he can
be a bit dodgy sometime....but oil level was well above half way. checked it again last weekend and it was nearly empty -- has been going through lots
of oil but can't see any puddles on the driveway or anything.
Okay, so that's it,
Any ideas?????
it's really worrying me becuase usually the type 3 runs like a dream and has lots of power and get up and go. so sad. don't know what to do.
and like i said, i'm a bit short on cash at the moment.

Thorun,
First of all define "lots of oil"?
and a few thing to do:
Check for vacuum leaks?
Check timing and points etc.
Pull the tops off the carbs and check for water, crud etc.
Check the accelerator pumps are working.
Air cleaner free of wasp nests?
Fuel pump diaphram leaking - filling the crankcase with fuel, which is burnt off when the engine is hot, makes it look like its chewing oil?

excellent - thankyou thankyou!
now i just gotta stop procastinating...!!!
met up with a kombi friend of mine on friday and he reckons i am blowing heaps of black smoke and my carbies are dirty therefore its running rich...
does that sound right?
and yep yep its me Thorun aka lil_dub from the old forum....but i am back to being a "learner dubber" here! oh well, its pretty true because
i don't really know shit about volkswagens i just like them a lot!!!
yeah, sorry i kinda disappeared for a while, i ended up staying in iceland for ages....for too long really....i should have come home...but you
know...all that cold weather and fish and it was all to appealing..... but now i'm home again yay!!!! back to crazy brisbane and its stupid
weather and my beloved type three.
(is it sad that i missed my car so much??? when i finally got it on the road i went for a big drive and totally grinned the whole way and was like
singing and stuff i was so happy....thats pretty embaressing and yes i am pretty lame)
good to be backed...and nice to have been missed...but i am trying not to get addicted to this forum again...its unhealthy for me....
now i gotta go and drain the water from my car (so many leaks.....so much wet carpet after fridays crazy weather)
