Flat spot, chug chug, go??? Help me


OK so heres the deal.
Going along the highway at 100k put the foot down a wee biut more and i get: nothing, then acouple of spurts then she goes!

But it also did it after going around a roundabout at slow speed.

Please help, the wife has to drive it to work tomorrow and i don't want it to die on her.

oh yeah its a 1600tp with stock carbi and filter

Points closed up,too much crud in your filter(s),fouled plug(s),timing off a fraction,intake manifold airleak,blocked accelerator pump tube,i dont know ive had all these so pick one and when you find out come back an tell what it was so i can add it to my collection.:)

My vote is with the carb, accelerator pump tube blocked or the diaphragm stuffed.

I had the same thing happen to me. I think it was the carby he took one of the hoses off it and blew it out with with an air compresser and all was well.

mmm does it always happen when the engine speed is pretty low? check for carb icing, look underneath the carburettor at the manifold and touch it to see if it is icy.

If it only JUST started doing this i would do the following:

new points
cap
rotor
leads
plugs
fuel filters.

yeah - a $100 or so but should scatter gun most of the problems.

If it still does it after that - well, roses are cheap this time of year.

out of curiosity, what does carb icing indicate, as I took bug (1600 tp like buzz) on particularly rough track,, was running sweet b4, then afterwards I realised the idle screw had come loose, and was running like 'something ikky on bottom of ones shoe'... (worn out holden carbi),, will be changing to a webber soon, bu-ut, the manifold was icy..... (such a timely post.lol!)...

i mucked around with idle and mix and is running fine again, but because the carbi is too big it is sooo touchy with the tune,, I also thought I was imagining things, but ambient temp seems to affect it too, ie runs a little rougher when weather gets colder (day goooood, night,, not so good).... i have done points, coil, condenser, plugs leads etc,, timings spot on.... it has heaps of power ,but I can feel it change, not so smoooth... pehaps you hold the key masser gwasshopper :D

or does my car just have asthma?:)

sorry buzz, no hijack intended...... just did search,, icing=recondensation of fuel,, flatspots,, ok sorted that out= my setup could be improved.... someone told me a while ago that the flow rate is too high on my carbi???, what happens if you have a carbi thats too big? :)

what happens if the fuel recondenses? does it flood the spark?? is that why you get a flatspot? questions questions,, so many q's!

Firstly Buzzbug,
You are supposed to say, "A couple of months After My car was serviced, the ignition timing & valves done, plus new points, plugs, condenser, dizzy cap & rotor button etc replaced.... this happened "
.... and then We will know its not the timing or the new plugs etc... but after a long time.... the problem can be many things that just naturally wear out and change the ignition timing.... etc..
Your problem does sound a bit like the accelerator pump not adjusted correctly, but the engine probably just needs a tune up... with new points & plugs etc... at least its not stopping... rather the opposite... going faster....
[find out what made it go faster & sell it to the rest of Us]:):)

$2-63 Baja : sounds like an icing problem with Your carb...
at Night - Bad time for icing... You should be careful with Your Larger carby, and make sure its running richer rather than leaner... although the jets are probably too large for Your engine... so its probably running too rich... which the engine doesn't like... but its much better than running Lean.. engine health wise... Best of luck with Your weber...

I did mean weber wif 1 b,, opps,, if I am running too rich, will I end up clogging up my valves with excessive carbon deposits? If you run it too lean is that where you can crack things? If I am running it too rich will I shorten the life of the plugs? should i start up a seperate post for my ever increasing list of questions????lol. Thanks for responding 68, I have been running it richer (exhaust is usually on darker side of grey!)...I just have so many q's! lol sorry!

I know.lol... I actually have an alfa 33 sitting in front yard (awaiting tlc after trip to tassie,, ie I killed it doing 130 most of way,,,ooops...) but it has twin dellortos,,,and keeps shuddering when I look its way!!! the weber i have is basically the same as the alfa carbis... prob is if I take those off the alfa,,,nahhhhhhhh....lol

the probs i am currently having are not chronic... just annoying because it's not running,, well ... perfect..lol...

I wan't my baja to run the same as my alfa did!lol.... I am learning still! bear with me!

Yes running with a rich mixture May carbon up Your plugs etc although it won't damage Your valves etc... which running a lean mixture does... Lean Mixture & VW Engines don't go together... actually - they don't go for long!!!
If Your 4 cylinders are still firing OK then the plugs shouldn't stop firing... even though they have a bit of carbon on them...
My Sons Baja with a dual throat Holley seems to run rich all the time as the exhaust extractors are very sooty... but has no problems with spark plugs fouling...
When You accelerate, You may be actually flooding the engine with too much fuel & not enough air... due to having Jets too large for the size of the engine....
If You had smaller jets, the carby would probably work OK... but then they wouldn't work on a 6 cyl engine..... so they are probably not available....
Now where is that Weber ??? or Dellorto ?? :):)

ahh, so is that one of the reasons for engine oil going black? Minute bits o' carbon getting back in via the pistons?? ( don't laugh fellas, I am not up to racin standards!Plus my girlfriends just give me a vacant look if i talk brum brum's with them.lol. )...

oh and am i imagining things, but because it's running rich,, it makes the engine oil feel and smell a bit different to normal (on dipstick, almost a little thinner??)....
