If you intend on driving it on the street as a normal drive car I wouldn't. They tend to run a weeee bit hot. Potential is like most things limited
by $$$$. Good base for a drag motor and a second morgage... As for price...how long is a piece of string?Nearly bought one in 1986 for $4800 which was
big $$$$ back then...

Scat make several different quality cranks (various prices) that can be put into many varied engine combos.
Do you want a warm street engine, hot street engine, race engine??
As Mick said "how long is a bit of string"
Better motors can be built in Oz my master machinists and other reputible engine builders, don't need to spend ya $$ in the US.

I would only buy something like that if the owner was willing to pull it down, then buy the bits and reassemble it. By a scat motor do you mean a scat
case ? or scat internals in a std case ?
Find out who built it, contrary to popular belief, there are people in the US that know how to build engines :alien
Oops I just re read it, the engine is in pieces right ? Kinda depends on the price and what you want out of it...

I just heard recently that SCAT are crap...
SCAT made good interiors etc for VWs.
Then decided to get into the HOT VW engine Scene...
Their Crankshafts etc are NOT well Made...
this came from a well known VW engine engine builder..

Scat have been making crank's for 35 years, I would say if they were crap they'd be out of business by now.

I've heard similar Lee.
About the only decent cranks in the US at the moment are old ones. The quality of the steel in todays units is just not as good as it used to be.
If you find an old Okrasa crank, check out the $$ and compare it to a new unit from Bugpack, CB Performance, Scat, etc.

I cant believe you guys, have any of you measured them yourselves ? or are you just repeating something you heard ?
Most people can't afford Okrasa, Berg, Moldex cranks. The scat, cb, bugpack, or welded cranks are the norm.
If its a deal and everything is straight buy it. Unless you are going to make 300 + hp I wouldnt worry.

works.....
what would you guys pay for one of those?

Scat Have made some cast cranks which should be avoided like the plague. Any of their forged stuff made in america will be more than good enough for
any street motor. The flanged cranks are excellent quality I hear and the rods are plenty strong. If they arnt strong enough find out how much a set
of carrilos are worth$$$$ |

FWIW I ran a cast 82mm crank in a 2180 for 15000 miles and sold it in one piece. It was a real torque monster with a 5000 rpm redline (hydraulic
cam/lifters and single springs). I beat the shit out of it regularly.
Its all about fit for purpose, if you dont want to rev over 5500 a cast crank will work OK.
As for $$ depends on heads and how straight it all is and what its worth to you, you need to post the specs really...

scat motor
This question is a dossy! The motor you talk about[ if its a complete scat engine] is a nice find. The things you need to ask? Is it allscat[crank, rods, motor case] Is it a wet sump motor or dry sump motor[oil sump case, dry case which sucks oil from a oil tank] Does it have vwtype heads
or scat split type heads. Is it a old speedway motor[lot of wear or blow-ups]. The big question?how much life is left in it[ look at bearingsizes, engine case sizes, conrod life, sizes on crank and cracks on mains]. What size is the motor? What head stud pattern[ same as vw or wide patternfor big bore cylinders,96mm-up] My engine was a complete scat motor 84by94bore dry case motor with split type heads with flywheel & clutch [flangecrank ,forged chromoly, steel scat conrods] Paid 4500 dallars plus costs to freshen-up and costs to put in my dragcar [oil tank, ignition, exhaust, fuelsystem and more] If you put vw heads on scat case and cooling, you may put it in a street car. What this motor is worth is up to all above!and what
needs to be done.If you need help on anything .Ring me-0732006805 or carorama@dodo.com . I may be interested! peter page[dak-a-tak]

If the redline is at 10,000 explains why it is being sold in pieces.
My engine is a scat race-ready engine with different heads and cooling system. I would never contemplate reving it to 10,000.
Stop trying to troll for a buyer and tell the guy to advertise it if he wants to sell it.
If he built/bought it from scratch, he will have a full list of all components. The cost can vary by 5-10k depending on every last piece.

the engine is in pieces as the guy that has it used to be in vw something like 10 years ago and pulled the motor out of the car and pulled it apart
for a rebuilt and change seals etc.....it has everything to be put back together....at least you are able to see condition of internals....i will be
getting some infos and let you know exact specs of it.....anyway.....
he is selling it....i don't want to buy it but maybe someone will or may be interested....the guy lives in the bush .....and just wants to get rid of
it...am only letting people know of it as someone might be interested.....just trying to help
