Thermofans


I have a remote oil cooler above the gearbox in my beetle and wanted to know what type of thgermofan I should get from the wreckers???

Should I get 2 small ones or one large one (may be too thick to fit though).

I bought an external oil filter with external oil cooler years ago, but I've never used it...
I did fit 2 x 5 inch square 12 volt fans I bought somewhere,
I think they may have been out of computers...
They just cover the oil cooler neatly. I presume You are talking about a much larger oil cooler than I have..
I don't think it makes much difference... I See Radiators with two fans and sometimes one fan...
Probably two would be better, as You could switch them on individually.. You may not need two to be going all the time..
and if one stops working, You always have one working..

I have read a few times now that a vdub motor up to 2liters will not need an extra oil cooler, assuming timing and all that is right. what are your views guys...and girls

Yes, I have read that somewhere too,
that a VW engine with a doghouse oil cooler & wider fan etc.. will cool a VW engine up to 2 litres....
Any thoughts on this You fellows in the know??
I think it would depend on the engines Compression ratio etc... as high compression does send the head temperature UPwards..

i guess if you run a thermostat, the external oil cooler wont work until it needs to. same with the thermofans, you could have them switch on at a certain temperature. I think there might be some articles that might help on the autospeed website

I have a Porsche fan set up so I don't know if it is as good as a Dog House fan.

I just want to know off what car is a good thermofan to use. Is it better to have 2 smaller ones or one big one????

Hi all,

I have had no experience with running thermofans on VW's, however my Brother runs them on almost everything he owns (only VW of course!). The cooler is mounted above the gearbox in every case and he runs a single Davies-Craig fan attached to a thermoswitch (thermofan switch from a Mk 1 Golf). The thermoswitch is mounted into a custom made brass block that is installed in the oil line, just after the oil cooler. Just for interests sake, he also runs a manual switch and a warning light on the dash so that he can see what is happening and switch it manually if required (but rarely uses the switch now that its all set up).

The type and size of fan is entirely up to you, and of course, depends on the mounting position of the oil cooler.

Oh yeah, the cars that my Bro has fitted the cooler/fan system to are his '65 Westfalia Camper (1776 type I), '64 Baja (2.1 Type IV with Porsche Fan conversion - interestingly, since picking up the 'correct' porsche fan for the housing that he owns, the thermofan almost never comes on, just as we were told would happen), and a '65 Bug (1800 Type IV with upright cooling conversion).

Not that I am aware of. There might me, but I just don't know of them!

Not a bad idea though, perhaps I could organise something like that and add it to my site.....(wanders off looking for camera and brothers phone number......)

all the pobjoy 1916s run with factory cooling no extra coolers etc and they don,t seem to have any heating problems as far as i can research. although he does recomend hoodjacks.From my own research a porche style alternator and correct fan housing are reputed to be the ducks guts for cooling especially the down the middle style housing. this is what i aspire to for my 1916 as soon as i have the money but only because i am super para noid about overheating. on my girlfriends car i adapted a front airbox from a 71 superbug to an undercar scoop that runs twin 60mm hose up through the parcel shelf an directly into the fan housing to supply heaps of air into the fan and this seems to work a treat. i will probably do the same on my 64 if i cant get the cash for the porche style fan. i will definately run hoodjaks.

do you have temp gauge on it yet? if you on't have a a CHT and oil tmep gauge on it get them on and c if you really need the thermo fan. I fun a 8.5:1 comp in the 1776 and it runs cool with the extra cooler.



I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!
