Country Buggy spindles (making similar?)
Well,
Both my kidz announced the other day that they thought
buggies were cool and they both want buggies as their first
cars! (the manx kinda buggies...). BUGGIES! (gees I wonder who the real father is?....).
Anyway been pondering whther there is a formula for CB spindles
for you (err it looks like now us) buggy guys. Questions..
1. Why are CB spindles so sought after? I assume because they give
more clearance or 'lift'. Achieved by stub axle in CB spindle being 'lower'
relative to beetle stub axle. Tie rod attaches to top
too. Yes??????
2. Fairly confident now (thanks Dave B. and Ian desertbus)
that CB spindles are actually (originally) barndoor spindles with 20mm
link pins. These are 'attached' in a CB by reaming beetle torsion arms out to take
the 20mm link pins.
3. Wondering if by flipping early (pre 63) bus spindles upside
down and side-to-side and restacking on king pin whether
similar effect could be achieved..... (pre 63 bus spindles also have 20mm link pins)...... bit unsure about how the lift side would work out..
4. I have barney spindles here and could investigate. Can't imagine it being any less work/cheaper than doing splitbus dropped
spindles (which I do for $450 or $550 on yer own spindles depending if king pins
need rebuilding/rebushing or not). Would us buggy guys
be happy to pay that sort of money for this sort of thing?

Yes, the CB spindle attaches to the bottom and the middle of the KP Carrier. This means they have 'lower' spindles and the Spindles sit under the KP
carrier both top and bottom. And Yes I beleive the tie-rod attaches to the top.
I will post a photo tonight confirming this for you.

It would be good if you would investigate further. I'll post some pics to help. Has Buggy Brad posted you those CB spindles of his yet?
If you could come up with a way to make CB spindles for less then the market rate of CB spindles people would be willing to pay it. Including those
people that are restoring a CB that does not have the factory front end in it any longer.

EEEk I will have to check mine - I assumed the torsion arms were beetle dimesnions - will check in a day or two. Lucky I didn;t chuck my old front end
out, if they are different link-pin sizes!!

Ok, no I haven't sent them yet as i can't get the damn drums off. I will be encouraging them thsi weekend with Mr Gas axe....
The main reason want CB stuff is to get the lift and maintain the standard steering geometry.
If I was going to make parts for a buggy though I would look at doing it to BJ stuff instead. If you can make a 181 styel setup using Aussie Beetle
stuff you would sell a lot more and cores are easy to get. Factory disc brakes and larger tie rod ends etc etc .
My CB stuff will be sent Tuesady next week either with or without drums as I am keen to find out what can be done and you are the man to tell us :>

Ive looked at 181 as well. Yes they will provide extra height in the front end using B/joints.
Only problem is the Ball joints are different to all the stuff we have here. The last set i got for Andrew Dodd to use on his London to Sydney car
was from Bali... so you have to know some one going for holidays over there to purchase some for you
They attach in a different direction ( compared to beetle ) to the trailing arms.

You can get 181 ball joints from the states for 85US plus postage. for a full set

Really? Last time I looked they were allot dearer than that. Where did you get that quote from?

I have bought about a dozen 181 Ball Joint's From teh USA for $80 - $85 USD for a set of 4. They are German ones and all come from a guy on Ebay call
Pimpride who owns ISP West.
I am pretty sure that if we wanted to buy a few sets then he would give us a better price.
The king and link stuff for the splits is getting hard to come by in good nick. Then again if need be getting it made up would be an option if the
interest was there. If CB style stuff could be supplied then the interest would be there.

Ordered mine last week.......................$85US + $35US postage (5day delivery) so about Aus $150 or $37.50 each delivered !!!!! About $5 more
each than buying german beetle balljoints here in Syd.

That last Picture Looks allot like a CB Spindle if you mounted it to the drivers side of the car....

Haven't sighted them yet. I'd guess monday. Then I'm
at work in melb all week meaning I prob won't be able
to get to the local post office in business hours until friday.
Brad, How did the spindles look when you eventually got the
drums off? (can be rough guide to general condition).

Take note ihad a look at a set the other day and i feel the tie rod angle will be to great resulting breaking of tie rod ends

Are replacement bushes available for the CB front end - mines a little ... er.... wobbly and I would like to sort it out.
