Tachometer installation ?

Want to ask is it possible to install a Third Party Tachometer into a 59 Beetle ? Looking at those performance car ones that hang out ... I am looking to hang it out right under the window or dash, is it possible to hook/connect one in ?

Also, is it legal or illegal ? since the size of one is so big ...

easy.
get an autometer monster tach, they give you 10 hp just by installing them :D
legal as long as it doesn't interfere with the view out the windscreen, or make the seating position dangerous. very very easy to fit. even i could do it.:P

what a lot of guys have done is take out the stock speedo and install a porsche tacho in its place, it requires about 1mm of clearancing, but thats about it. Although the downside is you have to get a speedo and somewhere to put the idiot lights (although i have seen them put in the tacho somewhere before)

The tacho's i have both hook up to one of the terminals on the coil, that's where they get the signal from. They also have + and - connections, plus lighting connections.

yeah they get their signal from the negative side of the coil, the tacho needs to know how many cylinders there are to get the right reading - or it is set from the factory. You'll need to run a wire from the engine of course, the rest is easy, should have 2 (+) terminals , one for the light one for the tacho, 2 x (-) or ground terminals for the light and tacho, and one more for the sender.

in what way do you mean powering?? there are usually multiple terminals for + and - connections... one set for lights, one for gauge, sender etc.... wiring diagrams are usually provided with the gauges.
