some maybe silly questions about painting
heys guys and gals have spent the last 3 months taking my fairly rough project back to bare metal and repairing all its sins and is now time to paint
. i have the car in hi fill at moment and am about to start the rub back process. Up until now i have been using the gear that belongs to the panel
shop next to where i live and was going to get them to do the final topcoat for me but situation has changed and i no longer have access to thier
gear ( read bummer ).So i have now changed my ideas about the finish i want for my project and thus have a few questions that you might be able to
help with.
A) i am looking at getting a 10 cfm 40 litre 2.5hp compressor, will this be suitable for diy painting.
B) It comes with a pressure regulator but should i get a regulator specifically for painting?
C) Am looking at buying just one gun so will a gravity feed gun be suitable for doing both the primer and the topcoats.
D) After much deliberation and visits to the volksrod site i have decided that a satin black finish with some airbrush bits in gloss is the go so can
anyone recomend a good type of satin black paint to use bearing in mind that i no longer have access to an oven and will be doing this in my shed (any
painting tips specific to satin paintjobs also appreciated ie flash off time between coats etc).
E) Do satin paint jobs get a satin clear coat?and if i airbrush some gloss bits and pieces can the same clear go over the whole lot ?
F) How many litres of paint , thinners etc should i budget on doing a beetle.
cheers in advance guys david

Not silly questions at all
A) i am looking at getting a 10 cfm 40 litre 2.5hp compressor, will this be suitable for diy painting.
- it will 'just' do the job a 12 cfm is usually the minimun and 15cfm what most people use, but seeing as it is a beetle and smaller and plus you
can do panels seperatley a 10cfm will get you there.
B) It comes with a pressure regulator but should i get a regulator specifically for painting?
- The regulator it comes with will be fine if it has a guage and is adjustable. Set it to about 60psi
C) Am looking at buying just one gun so will a gravity feed gun be suitable for doing both the primer and the topcoats.
- You will need two guns seperate as the nozzle/ needle setup for primer is different. Get a cheap putty/ primer gravity gun. The topcoat gun does not
have to be gravity fed, and a lot of acrylic paint jobs are still done with suction guns. A Star 770 which is a Taiwanese copy of the Iwata gun is a
poular choice and at about $120 is a good value for money gun. I have used one for more than ten years (for acrylic).
- Umm painting tips are hard to explain it is mainly all done with experience and 'feel'. A bit like Jedi really.
E) Do satin paint jobs get a satin clear coat?and if i airbrush some gloss bits and pieces can the same clear go over the whole lot ?
- Clear will make it shiny. I do not recommend clear with a matting base added as the matting base actually is the opposite to what clear is in a lot
of ways, so a waste really.
F) How many litres of paint , thinners etc should i budget on doing a beetle.
cheers in advance guys david
- Get a 20 litre drum of premium thinners
4 litres of Prewash/ degrease-it/ prepsol
4 litres of colour for beetle should be fine. I have done HQ's in & out with that much.
Hope this helps.

cheers helbus
Thanks helbus as usual guaranteed piece of mind however i have decided to get a 12 cfm 50 litre comp anyway as i envisage on adding more vehicles to
the stable down the track in particular a kombi so i might as well get a decent comp while i have the money.
about the gun the guy at paint mobile showed me a gravity fed italian made gun that he said could handle both apps with ease , i think he said it was
a 2mm nib or something it was 99 bucks on special does this make sense.
He also quoted me $89 for 4 litres of high quality satin i think it was protec does this sound right.
also once the satin topcoat is on do i have to block it back again and buff it or is it finished of the gun.
i assume that u still polish satin paint jobs for protection is this right?
The volksrod sight has a satin painted hebmuller which is kind of the look im going for , there is also a beetle on the prosign1 site which is satin
with gloss flames i am hoping to achieve this look but with blue and silver gloss flames. maybe you could check these out and let me know what you
think. cheers and thankyou david

Is a filter/water trap necessary?

The protec paint should be ok
If they guy says the gun will handle both types of product, then take his word for it.
I would let him know that if it cant handle both jobs then you will have every right to a refund, used or not, as he said it is intended for both of
those purposes.
I have only had experience with matt black on shadow blackouts like door frames and lower door sections like some cars have from factory (newer cars).
In these cases it is never necessary to cut or polish as they are only small areas.
I don't know about whole vehicle jobs, you may get differing opinions, and I just dont know about that one sorry.

this is the kind of finish im hoping to achieve, but am not sure about the polishing bit as they seem shinier than some matt jobs ive seen. i am
assuming there is a finish diff between matt paint and satin paint.

Most regulators have a simple particle and water drainage bowl attached.
I have never worried about a dessicant or refrigerated air drier at home. We do have these at work, as we are running about 100cfm turbine compressors
for about 9 hours a day.
When spraying acrylic it is not recommended to spray unless between 15 and 35 degrees.

That's true.
I didn't think most compressor regs included any sort of filtration, mine certainly didn't. If the compressor he is planning to buy doesn't have a
filter, it's probably worth fitting one of the simple particle filters with a water bowl you mentioned.

There are different ways of achieving a satin or semi gloss 2 pack paint jod it all depends whether you want to pay Auto paint prices or not, also
keep in mind that these duller finishes won't last as long as full gloss will, so make sure you maintain the fishish by washing in regularly and tyr
not to leave it parked in the sun all day.
By the way there are single pack acrylic systems available if 2 pack worries you.
Good luck and have fun.

two guns the prices i got today were for 12cfm 50 lt 2.5hp tank from total tools in melb it is there own brand and is trade quality 3year warranty for
$599 comp only add $44 for hoses. They do a 16cfm 50 lt for $799 but the guy reckons the 12cfm will easily handle painting app. The gun i am looking
at is from paint mobile melb and is an italian made 2mm nib gravity feed gun that i am told is suitable for both filler/primer and topcoat. the comp
actually looked a lot like the eagle one from your thread. a filter regulator was $44 from paint mob.
Two guns isnt your splitty painted in satin if so is it acrylic or two pack and do you know if it was cut and polished after spraying. iam hoping to
do my 64 in imitation of the flame jobby posted above but with blue to silver flames. I really like the subdued look of the satin finishes and i also
think as a first time restorer it may be a bit more forgiving of my talents than a full gloss paintjob.
