Beetle fuel consumption

REDKG's thread got me thinking. Did a search, but got no threads show up. I read beetles are economical and am curious on what other beetle owners get out of their pride and joys.
I have a 71 beetle 1600, and have not worked consumption out yet. I am trying to trace where the fuel leak is first. Until I figure that out, I'm not filling it up completely.
