and of course some progress shots showing the car now that it has over riders on.

makes it look heaps better i reckon.

http://img253.echo.cx/img253/4973/dsc025938tv.jpg

back bumper still needs to be 'tweaked' a bit, as it looks like the top of it is leaning back too much. spent a fair bit of time getting it this far as the old irons where badly bent, and the new ones didnt fit the bumpers.

still more engineering bits and peices to go.

most of the interior is out so that floor plates can go in under the carpet.
additional mods to the braking system, including t3 rear drums (bigger).
rear inertia reel seat belts (2)

still some stuff to do on the stereo, but i might end up doing this myself after rego.

biggest drama is getting the correct information from CB performance regarding the dropped spindles so that my engineer will sign them off.

i have another post going for this, but i wonder....

... has anyone had CB dropped spindles go through an engineering certification?

i need all the help i can get at solving this problem, otherwise there will be serious time and expense (on top of what i have done so far) getting the car engineered.

Progress:

still got dramas with engineering paperwork on the spindles
i m hoping that i can get info from CSP in Germany, as CB are 'still looking into it'...... great.

anyway, all the other engineering stuff has been done:
floor plates
seat belts in the rear, including mounting points
guages
wiring (head unit, front tweeters and amp)
speedo (t3 orange needle KMPH, just for something different, matches the guages)
glovebox
spare wheel (still gotta put repro hazet in)
brake system upgrade (t3 rear drums)

shes getting close

heres some pics

dash with guages in and custom speedo
http://img60.echo.cx/img60/3068/dsc02708edited8pg.jpg

speedo has lLEDs hidden in for all the functions that u usually find on a beetle speedo, or on the dash. i think it has come up real well

and of course the new mirror, which needed a bit of work. theres not much point in having a mirror if you cant see out of it!!

makes me glad that we waited until the seats (and me) were back in before it was fitted.

Fantastic Kim, sorry I haven't been able to help more with the engineering certification of dropped spindles - I am yet to go through that but the engineer I have been dealing with didn't seem to be too concerned when I showed them to him before bolting them on. Have you called and spoken to CB directly?

Otherwise might be worth posting on http://www.cal-look.com  in the forum because I think there are a couple of CB employees there who may help??

The car is looking sweet - your head unit mod on the dash has come up a real treat too - good stuff! :thumb

thanks for that jen, i take that as a huge compliment considering how nice your bug is.

i m still going through engineering dilemas, so i m hoping they will be solved soon enough to get to the dyno day

got another spindle from CB today

only way this is gonna get engineered is with a failure test on the CB spindle compared with the VW unit.

so we've got to set up a system that will allow the engineer to test both to failure. its gonna be alot of weight to break them i think

it has basically taken me 3 months to chase down all the possible leads for other options, none of which amounted to anything. the test option was my last resort scenario which i was hoping to avoid.

i have realised that virually no one gets their cars engineered.

please.....

..... lets hope that it can pass the tests and get certified.

Would you be able to keep this test report so others with drop spindles can later use the same report to get their car certified? or does it have to be one test per certification?

i will talk to the engineer about this.

i will definately be keeping it, but from what i understand, each vehicle has be to certified on an individual basis.

the testing that i am going through will likely make things easier for others. will probably end up costing around $1000-$1500 on top of what testing would have cost me anyway, which will be around the $1500 mark.

damn, it adds up quick.

i ll have a chat to the engineer and see what he thinks about passing the info on to others

previous idea was using the ball joint spindles.

appantley the link pin ones have never been engineered in australia, and from what i can gather to date, any where else for that matter.

yeah spoke to them many times

the only way they ended up helping me was encouraging me to buy more parts.
my assesment of their position was that (being from the good ol' US of A) they were not able to send me any information to verify the strength, materials, design or testing.

great

that leaves me to do all the hard work myself.

take this as word of warning, everyone: be careful of the words 'for off road use only'

not happy, but then again, life wasnt meant to be easy

ok, looks like step one of the engineering tests has been completed and passed.

on monday, i arrived out at Dandenong to see that Andrew (DubCustoms) has built be the biggest piece of apparatus possible (as requested by the engineer) and was ready to test the spindle.

i had a bit of a chuckle, as this was almost as big as the car and was placing up to 2 tonnes of load via a jack at a leverage of up to 4m - it ended up that we only needed a lever length of 1.5 - 2.0m

anyhow, i am yet to receive it, but i am now FINALLY confident that the CB dropped spindle that suits the wide 5 disc kit will be ticked off by my engineer. what a huge amount of greif this has caused, but finally we have progress.

to cut a long story short, the original spindle failed at a far less load than the CB item.

will post pics in the next few days.
and for all those that are interested, i will be passing on the information to others who want to get this kit engineered - for a cost.

not yet determined, but it will be a fraction of what the whole ordeal cost me, and is not profit making, just to offset some of what i have spent.

will keep you all posted.
