Type4 VS Wasserboxer

Let me set the scene.....
I move to albury for uni..... the beetle wont cut it for driving home, the 5hr drive up here and back would be so shitty, too low and the 1300 wouldnt like it to much i dont think.....

so heres the idea i have....

A square, plenty of room and shit like that, just a beater of a body and nothing special atall.... but ill have to lower it ofcourse....

what are the BENEFITS and PROBLEMS comparing 2LTR aircooled VS a waterboxer 2 Ltr the radiator install isnt much of a problem for me ..... just wanting to know the benefits....

cheers
adz

hmm, the type 3's are rumoured to have some cooling problems, and the number of cracked heads I've pulled off them would seem to confirm that. I'm talking about stock motors, so I would expect that anything creating more power than stock would create more heat...

Are you talking about a 2 litre TIV or a stroked/bored type 1 motor?

Either way, I found late type 3's to be too light in the front end, so much so that they understeered heavily and were very prone to crosswinds, unless driving with a permanent ballast under the bonnet. I wouldn't be too keen on putting a heavier motor hanging out over the back wheels without improving their roadholding and stability, especially for those long drives. It's so much more relaxing if your car doesn't try to drive off the road at the slightest gust of crosswind. :jesus

I think something watercooled would suit the purpose better, but use something light, for handling's sake.

have a mechanic here in coffs that has a 2L type 4 engine and he hasnt had any troubles in the past year with it it can really only be done with an IRS model cause u have to adjust the angle of the engine so that inturn the angle of the gearbox only achievable with IRS!

you can bore and stroke the type 4 out to 2.9ltr;)
or scratch that idea and put a 12a turbo or 13bpp.
I just picked up a type 3 that had an 1800 out of a kombi in it and all that had been done was the manifolds were cut down allowing the engine lid to shut, and mods to the rear engine crossmember. Not to hard if youve got the tools. ie welder n grinder. But yeah convert to i.r.s . You only have to change the rear subframe if i remember rightly.

Go buy an old Type 411 or 412 from the wreckers at Canberra, it already got the aircooled 1.7 and can be fitted with a 2 Liter no problems

either engine will cost you to rebuild make sure you can get the parts bearings mainly before starting

Hi

Im not sure what Type 3 weighs but to fit a 12a legally to the car it would have to weigh 960 kgs from the factory. RTA rule 12a turbo motor = 2400 cc So 960kgs x 2.5 = 2400 cc max with the RTA. The best thing about a wasserboxer is not having to work on it all the time, still sounds like an aircooled motor but not as noisy.

Steve

I just checked the 1970 hand book for the Type 3 it says

Unladen weight 1035 Kgs so that would be a problem with a rotary in it.

I knew these hand books would come in handy

My rego sticker gives the weight as 950kg, mine is a convertible, but I would expect it to heavier than standard.

Capacity of 12a according to manual is 1146cc so for Aust we multiply that by 2 so 2292cc . It makes die hard v8 boys scared to know that 1146cc can make 130hp in standard trim. A type 3 wagon that i had weighed 960 on the dot, so I was legally allowed to put a 13b in it which is about 2660cc.
I still have the rear crossmember that I made for it, did good burnouts in the backyard when it was running. (body had shit loads of rust , so it went to the big scapper in the sky), saved the rear suspension of course.
