Thanks for that.

I looked up Base backpackers and yeah they look pretty cool. The Great Outdoors has done a review as well.

OK I work for YHA....but....

We have two in North Melbourne...but funky they are not....

Queensberry Hill isn't bad though and won a tourism award this year...it's 20 minutes walk into the centre of the CBD...and near the Vic Market

http://www.yha.com.au/hostels/search/region.cfm?regionid=72

St Kilda is a really popular backpackers area

The Nunnery is very popular in the Fitzroy/Carlton area

http://www.bakpakgroup.com/nunnery/home.htm

A guy I worked with is managing the Rob Roy in Brunswick St Fitzroy...Ben's a cool guy and is the lead singer with 'Small Goods'.....doing funky Brit 60's type music...They used to do gigs there prob still do...http://www.therobroyhotel.com/

OK that's my lot

I stayed at Toad Hall backpackers in the city when I first came to Melbourne and it was very good (about 3yrs ago). It was a reasonable price, clean and a couple of minutes walk in to the centre.

Are you going anywhere particular in town so we know what area to suggest...?...what side of city...So many of the backpackers right in town are sorta sleazy and not funky at all...:puke

Toad Hall does have a good name...but it is an unwelcoming looking place on Elizabeth St...near Queen Vic Market...

i needed somewhere to stay for a week or so in melb when on a tour over east last year. needed somewhere to leave my mates trailer & dirtbike while he kept driving into nsw. i stayed in melb fanging my bike around during the day & finding dinner & beers at nite.

i couldnt be stuffed ringing around & researching, second phone call hit Carlton College Summertime Hostel for Backpackers 95 Drummond Street, Carlton, 3053, Victoria phone: 1800 066 551 dont know bout funky but it was ok, cheap, v close to city and 1 street back from lygon st.

i dont know how it rates in terms of clean & comfy 'cause we spent most that trip in swags on the ground...'

next time i'd prob stay in stkilda - more pubs & less resturants

A link to Carlton College

http://www.bugaustralia.com/reviews/Victoria/Melbourne/Other_Areas/auvic080/

It's in the same part of Melbourne as The Nunnery and Rob Roy

One of my very favourite tour companies has a good list of Melbourne backpackers..

http://www.waywardbus.com.au/leadsmelbournebackpackers.htm

Don't you love the kombi!!! Damn they sold it last year and I didn't know!!! They're based in Adelaide...

Well you need to eat before a heavy session of drinking ....... St Kilda is definitely the scene for backpackers in town ..... Lot's of long term stayers rent in the area as well.....
