You'll probably find fitting extractors is your best bet. I picked up an "Empi" system for my T1 that made a magical difference, is
quieter than the old one ("quiet" or Glass pack muffler) and was really cheap. The paint turned white the first time I took it for a decent
drive, but it works great!

Adz, I was having trouble with the standard extractors' thin, three-bolt flange. I took it to the exhaust shop and after 1/2 hour and $20 I drove
out with a new two-bolt flange which was much thicker (10mm) to avoid flange leaks.

You can use any type of muffler on extractors, I have a hotdog on the type 3 and before that I had a standard oval muffler. The hotdog wasn't my
choice, I just wanted something that gave me ground clearance and thats how it came back. What I really wanted was an oval muffler with inlet and
outlet on the same side, so the other side could be tucked up behind the rear panel.

Correct, you can fit any muffler to extractors. If your engine is close to stock, you may have problems with a lack of back pressure with some types
(eg large hotdog.) With stock diameter pipes a quality glass pack is probably the best bet, unless you really like a lot of noise! I don't
think you'll have a lot of trouble finding a suitable replacement, if you do, V-Dub Spares and Repairs in Fremantle, WA, boasts he can provide a
full range.
