dropped split
Hi all i am about to drop my 67 split not sure what way to go about it i have a good cond 70 bug box how much would i expect to pay for a straight
axel conversion and is this ok for an allround drive bus
what is the average price for dropped spindles or is it ok to just use a adjuster???
any advise from low bus owners would be great
thanks Bob

CBB do a very popular straight axle conversion.
Shane Hobson's Split Ute featured int he current VWMA has one.
More info on the conversion here:
http://www.cbbvw.com/hamerd.html
It is available in kit form for those out of Sydney or those who want to install themselves - they have also sent the kit to other shops for
customers.
Phone: 02 4722 9313
Email: custombugsandbuses@bigpond.com
They are doing a few at the moment so they may be able to provide pics of the installation.

They also do the dropped spindles and front beams. They can even adapt a late beam to a splitty with boosted brakes etc.

get 2 short end casting bettle axle tubes lengthen them the same length as bettle long axle tubes ,get long bettle axles ,get a 1500 box swap the nose
cone for the one on your split and thats it.
you can also put adjusters into your front beam that cbb do or go for the drop spindles.
i have posted pics on a sraight axle conversion if you want to search for them |

why are you going straight axle?
the IRS is a much better idea. it costs abit more but with it you get sports car handling possibilites and you could use an lbug box for great highway
gearing. unless you wanna drag race ya split seriously I wouldn't ever stay with swing axle.

I know two people who have had IRS and have gone to straight axle. They prefer the ride and handling especially when they are low!
Shane's ute (in VWMA #3) has done just that. He says that getting rid of the IRS was the best thing he ever did!

well it wasn't set up right by the installer, you have to get the angles correct for lowered cars. That's why indian sells ecentric bushes for their
set-up. Who put the IRS on the ute?
No offense, but irs is far superior to swing axle for everything except the drags and tight dirt racing. It's also safer, that's why porsche, then
vw went to this type later on.

Kombibob;
I don't want this to become one workshop against another or anythign so I'm going to head off a debate between matt and myself by saying this.
imagine this;
it's abeautiful day outside, but you have to work. So you give the keys to your top splitty to your ____ (wife/girlfriend/son/best-mate). He's
driven it before but not often. While coming round a tightish sweeper the ____ (torana/excel/bowlinglady) in front of him/her slows suddenly and your
friend comes off the power suddenly.....
(if you have swingaxle this can happen)
the back lifts shifting the weight onto the outside wheel, as the camber goes massively positive, the rim hits the road and digs in....over she goes
and your loved one is injured/killed.
(if you have IRS this happens)
the back lifts shifting the weight onto the outside wheel, the tyre tries to hold as best it can as the wheel gets only a few degrees of positive
camber. your friend's heart stops but all is ok.
I don't mean to be dramatic but that's exactly why bay window buses have IRS. If you care about yourself, your friends/family and other road users,
spend the extra money and have the piece of mind to go with it.
