Our new (old) 64


We picked up our new baby yesterday from Bendigo. Has been well cared for by a great VW family up there and the caretaker role has to moved to me and Sam.
Nice little beetle that will be a great base for what we have planned. Already has an Avis adustable beam and a few choice accessories. The coolest bieng fully reclining front seats that enable the front seats to slide forward and fold back to form a totally flat area you could sleep on. (Just the thing for Valla trips hey!! or the drive in)
But we have a long list of accessories to go on it over the next few months.
Heres a few piccys for you all.

From the back. Has a few little nicks and dents here and there. Has a few bumps and hollows in the roof panel. But the additon of a Golde factory Steel sliding sunroof panel off a 65 in my shed will soon fix that up.

Nah nuthin wrong with it. Just easier to trailer it home. Been doing a few things on it today. Added a kilometer speedo, fixed the horn. fiitted a cool short shift kit that I had in the almost dead 65. And cruised around the block a couple of times.

Rhett I know how she was feeling mate. I had the same feeling when the Grey Oval drove off down the street with its new owner. sob!

We picked up a motometer rally pack, helphos spottie, round tool kit complete!!! Ha ha . Naa mate only kidding. I did find a complete early 60's beetle headlight assembly. Got it for a buck. bargain!!

No way Dave. Its never too good for a factory sunroof fitment I reckon.
In any case the roof of this 64 has a few dents and humps in it.
Cant wait to let the sun shine in mate.

Dont forget to add a stiffiner from front dash to rear area below the window before you cut the roof this will stop the car from sagging while the roof is off.

are you cutting through the pillars or just going to add the center section of the roof ???

peeling the skins off and changing them if i remember correctly, because its a steel sunroof all the supports willl have to come across too.... but i may be wrong hehe

We will be un-folding the roof seams (gutters) , drilling out the spots around the front and rear windows and below the vent slots below the rear window.
Easier and less welding than cutting a hole or at the pillars and trying to re-alighn it all.

Dean no wonder you're stuffed....a very big day!!!!

Excellent pic of the rag top off...in the roof peeling process...the one with Molley....The pic before as well......Gives a great understanding of the process..... :cool:

From what I saw of the process when they fitted the rag top clip to Bel...this will be a lot easier, if what you've just done here just goes in the reverse of the pics.....?...OK that may be a bit simplistic I know..... :blush

How hard was the roof peel to do, can u do it without damage, would this be an easy way to fix rusting behind the vents on late beetles?

No worries NB. I still have the manual. Did you need some other pics?

1st car, it would be pretty hard to do the peel with out paint damage. There is some welding that needs to be re-done when re-attaching the roof panel.
