Help - Tuning dual carbs


Can someone enlighten me how I am supposed to access the adjustment screws on the side of my very newly installed dual 36mm weber IDFs?
It took me ages to get everything in the right spot and now I can't get to the adjustments because they are too close to the engine bay side wall?
How is this done, to get them running OK and then to balance them?:(

I drilled 2 off 25mm holes in the sides.
Worked a treat - just put a screw driver through from the wheel well.

Also works a treat for getting the spark plugs out.

This needed to be done before the carbs were on so as you dont drill through them

Now - seeing as u have not dont this you will either have to get a custom made right angle screw driver or an allen key with a blade welded on or a little bit of sheet metal and cut it like a T. then stick your hand down the side and twidle/fiddle.
U might even get a tool from a hard ware / car shop.

Can you fit your hand down the side???

DId you set them at any setting ( say 1 1/2 turns?) before they went in???

You obvisously got them on - congratulations.

Yes, I got them on - with much cursing and frustration!

I had thought of the holes option - but I thought that there must have been an easier way, as so many beetles use dual carbs. I can't get my hand down the side, so I don't think that I would have much luck with another tool - there isn't enough room.

Also, can the engine be dropped out with the carbs in place? It would seem that they can from what I have seen in magazines, but it just looks like the carbs hang out wider than the oepning in the base of the engine bay.

No - the carbs must come off before you can drop the motor.

No biggie - i could pull mine in like 20 mins.

Go to your local Repco - Auto one and see what they have. May be an attatchment for a socket.

My mates have a bit welded on a socket. Works well - but not as good as the holes.

Then again - they done have holes in their car.

I cut 2 panels in teh side of mine as with the dells, there isn't much room at all. and also like blue said make changing plugs easier. And then made 2 alum panels with foam seals that are held in with captive threads (can't remember the name, like a pop rivet but with a threaded middle). buy having teh panels also means you can get to any part on the side of the carbs.



I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!
