new motor - non standard?

recently my cars motor developed a nasty rattle, then a nastier clunk, then wouldn't move. ok, so the engine has probably had it after ~3 years of hard driving. but i don't think i want to put the same gutless motor in again. are there any motors (apart from ej20) that go in fairly well and give a decent amount of performance? what about price?

depends on your definition of happily really.

also a rebuilt type 4 is expensive, and a 2nd hand one is a gamble.

EJ20 is good, but wide.

single overhead cam EJ22 is an easier fit. Still EFI.

earlier EA motors are cheaper and still good. some are carby.

Sorry for the off topic query... BUT

is a EJ22 narrower than the EJ20? Is this because the EJ22 is single cam? Are most EJ20's 2 cam per side? Or just the Turbo ones?

Cheers
Jeremy

I've checked my information and there is a single cam per head version of the EJ20. It's in the local Impreza's (not WRX or RS).

So the local market EJ20 may well be the same size as the EJ22.

hmmm 12a rotary....
i probably should mention to you blokes (any girls around) taht my dub is a bush basher. it has been suitably modified to bash bush and won't be (legally) driven on the road. rotary sounds good, but you need to rev to get power and fuel is 110cpl down here.
