VW gearbox options

hey
if using a big motor like a holden V6 in a kombi i would want a strong box but want to keep the VW box and heard that some gearmaker (alvins) can make VW boxers bulletproof able to handle 400HP???? Indian automotive have a kombi box that can handle 400hp but is 5000 grand :(

Which holden V6 puts out 400hp? I'm no expert on holden engines but the latest v8's have 300 badge meaning they arent putting out 400 hp either. These tricked up boxes still break when abused as well.

Dont try and do burnouts and a stock kombi box will take a V6's hp without any problems at all. Only thing is a commodore at 100kays is barely idling. You may want to buy the gears to drop engine speed.

Rhys

Lawrence Svensen at GERMAN AUTOS did my gearbox - 07 3865 5477. Very well respected in the industry, not just VW loonies like us.

The gears used don't make the gearbox bullet proof. It is the way the whole thing is put together as well as quality parts. A fool could assemble a gearbox with ALBINS gears and the thing could be a piece of sh1t.

From what I can gather, later kombi gearboxes are the way to go for the type of thing you're talkin about. Anything bigger (more expensive) would be over-kill.

Talk to Lawrence, but be warned, he won't tolerate time-wasters.

See ya round

Steve

Just use a 6-rib kombi box and treat it nicely. You can always upgrade the guts later when you have the cash.:)

I dont think there would be many people in Australia to have built more VW gearboxes especially tricked up ones than Michael Shimo, from Dunham Autos, Woonona.

I dont think theres a problem with breaking a kombi gearbox casing. The one in my race car is only an 1800, but 2 litre ratios would be slightly better suited. I dont think I'd like to be revving the V6 all the time.

fIRSTLY, "THE BADGES" ON THE BACK OF THOSE Commodore's is for kilowatts, not horsepower!!!! Secondly, The only thing you really should need to ammend is the gearing, but not essential! AAS LONG AS you DONT THRASH IT!!!! hehehe (WHAT NO FUN???!!!)

Cheers N!

Yes but using those numbers you can convert to horsepower! When I did the conversion I went the wrong way, so I admit 300kW is 400hp. But only just.

Its not essential to lower gearing but its not what the engine was designed to do. Im guessing it would be the equivalent of driving a commodore at 140 150 kms an hour or more.

I got my 6 rib built by Leons Motors in Brisbane. Leon knows what he is on about and has a very high quality of work.

I ended up going with a 6-rib with the later vanagon 4 spider diff put in it, and an Albins 0.70:1 ratio 4th so I can cruise the highway at 2200rpm. I think my kombi CV's will go first. And my box was about a third of the cost of the Indian box.

Well my engine is a Mazda, and Ford owns Madza. Besides the same engine was used in both Ford Probes and Mazda MX6's (and 626's and Telstar Ghias).

Sorry Chris, I was aiming that at Rhys. He said he would use a Ford engine if it fitted.

Well I have a Ford engine in mine and I reckon you could get it to fit in a kombi. You'd just need a custom fuel tank.

So basically, I don't see why he thinks he's stuck with a Holden 3.8 V6 as his only option. :thumb

look on my site and you'll see the throttle body and distributor hang over the gearbox. This is where a kombi's fuel tank is, and where my firewall was.

http://www.offroadvw.net/bajawes/V6_baja/images/wednesday/engineandbox.jpg

you might be able to turn the intake the other way though. But you'd have to figure it out.

I would like to someday put my intercooler and turbo where the fuel tank is. The plan is to put an alloy marine tank where the back seat is. Hellbug did it before with a kombi converted to subaru engine. Wouldnt mind putting a big hatch from a T3 kombi in while I'm at it cos they are huuge. relatively speakin.
