Engine missing and coughing


Ok i need help to work out what is wrong . I have replaced spark plugs, points, condensor, leads, dizzy cap and done the timing and given it a tune. The engine runs fine until it has done about 2000km then she starts to miss. it doesn't backfire just misses and it does it at low rpms and also high rpms.
Can anybody suggest what else i can try . The dizzy has been looked at but it seems to be ok

If the engines missing then I guess you'll have to push . . oh and for the coughing . . maybe try some Scotts compound or Irish Moss . . I hear that they work.

Mine used to be the same but at about 1000km the plugs would be fouled so ide pull em out clean and shove em back in,i had to do my points every 3wks and i had heard of a certain vw mechanic who did his points each week on friday before he went down bulli pass.Another thing was when i did a valve adjustment it was usually wrong because the head on the adjuster wore a concave dip into the top of the valves causing misleading tappet measurements.Anyway to sum up i think its your points suffering normal ware,do u have a dwell meter to take readings at say 500km intervals to see whats happening.:blah goodluck anyway dude.:kiss

i had a similar problem a while back and couldnt work out what it was but i finally noticed that one of my leads was sitting on the extractor and had melted into the core so it still had enough left to fire the plug but every now and then it would miss. this was in my baja where everything is open and my extractors come very close to my leads. but you say u replaced the leads so thats probobly not the problem.

You are not using the wrong coil which is stuffing up the points are you?

no i don't have a dwell meter but i guess i may have to start doing the point evry couple of weeks to see if that does something. as for the coil i believe it is the right one but will have a look the next time i can see the car in day light.
all i know it is real frustrating. thank for your help.

Are you fouling plugs???

Are they really black and carboned up???

Shitty leads coming loose?? bad connections???

You didnt say you changed the coil??? - could be a culprit

I used to have problems with plugs fouling up, normally when driving in peak hour on very small throttle openings. Went to NGK iridium and haven't ahd a problem in 10000k and haven't changed the plugs yet!!!



I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

yes the plugs are fouling up the are all black. one thing i did notice was one spark plug was a bit cleaner than the other 3. could this have something to do woth it
no the leads are fine and i believe that i changed the coil.

an obvious one is the choke coming off? cause if its not it will foul the plugs.
look at your exhaust if its sooty your running too rich a mixture and this could also foul the plugs

How long since its had a head reco,sounds like valve guides or maybe rings :duh

Well i had the mixture adjusted just prior to a trip down to Parkes NSW but by halfway home she started to miss again and yes it has been running rich ever since we had it and it still ran rich after the mixture was adjusted. so i guess it will be a carby problem that is fouling the plugs. I believe that the choke has been disconnected and not sure if it has been removed all together but will have a look over the weekend.
As for the heads have no idea when the last time they were looked at. When we do finally save some money i want to do a full rebuild and bore it out a bit
