New Project: Getting Started


Just after some help. I have previously owned VW's, but haven't bothered to take it any further other than just getting around. I am going from a Kombi into a type 3 Square and was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction. The car is mechanically sound and the body is ok. I am hoping to change the colour. Is it wise to just get that over and done with and then focus on the rest. Basically I'm after a list, a logical progression of what should be done. Any names of any books, what are the best to buy.

Me,
I have a bug and its now in 6000 pieces all around my garage and at BuggyBrads shop. But thats because I want to know everything about the car when its back together and I can't blame the previous owner for anything. Up to you as to how far you work/strip, but I would suggest do your work before you try to respray (just if you take the windows out, leave them out till after the painting).

Just my 2.2cents (post GST) worth.

Ok,
I'm on my 30th something rebuild of one at the moment,
Most of my cars are a body off floorpan rebuild.Except for the type 2's of course.It is a little easier for me as i was in the paint and panel game for years.
What sort of guidelines would you like to be posted?
Its dependant on how far you want to go?
I'd be happy to help.:thumb

Not wanting to hijack this post, but curious about something that Choo may have to do.
When you graft in replacement sections/panels, can they be put in without really noticing after grinding, filling, sanding and painting? Like say, window panels into a type2, or a new front wheel arch for a type 3?

If your welderwelding is good enough he/it should'nt warp the surrounding metal as he is "grafting" in a new section.
There will be some movement,but you can cover it up afterwards by working the area around the repair/modification.
I take time in my work to make sure that you cant see the mods or repairs that have been carried out.
Can send pics off the Bay single cab i have just finished rebuilding the lower front window frame on.It wasnt there to start with.
Things you only find once you pull the windows out....lol

no hijacking penguin. hehe
I don't want to go crazy. no show cars. But something nice. Respray. lower the suspension. re-upholster or some nice seats. Bits of chrome here and there. Redo the dash. A daily driver with a bit extra. There is that beautiful black sqaureback in nsw that some guys wife drive. In the driveway photo front and back shots. I like that.
As per normal, I don't have loads of money, so it will be a slow project.Things i can myself i will, but a lot will be outsourced, especially panel work, spraying, major engine work. any recommendations in the melbourne city area.
